This is an excellent video on Oxy-Acetylene Welding. You can see the weld pool perfectly as Steve demonstrates what to do with it.

Recently I needed to weld some sheet metal for one of my projects, and I knew my MIG just wouldn't be right for the job. I couldn't justify a TIG, I'm just a hobbyist. So an Oxy-Act set-up seemed well within my means.

But I'd forgotten all of the set-up and safety stuff since high-school graduation! That was 1984... Not that I'm too embarrassed to ask the folks behind the counter at my local welding supply house. But they're not there to instruct or build confidence beyond the sales pitch.

Thankfully, TVR and Steve Bleile were there to help. Watching the DVD was very informative and allowed me to successfully complete my project.

Since then, I've rented a number of other metalcraft DVDs from TVR and many (not all), of the instructors recommend gas welding over TIG. I've since purchased a jewelers torch and have become very satisfied with my results.

Great video photography! I was really able to see the "puddle" and then go out and try to re-create what I had just seen. I would have liked to seen more examples of different kinds of welding. This was limited to sheet metal. Some more examples of tubing would have been nice.

I found the video extremely helpful. The discussion about equipment, its setup, and adjusting the gases increased my confidence greatly. Equally helpful was the demonstration of what the flame should look like. I had read couple of books on oxy-acetylene welding but did not feel that I really understood what was needed to be safe and do a good job. Being able to see the adjusting process as it was being adjusted and having my attention drawn to what I needed to be looking at in the flame was far better than looking at a static picture or series of pictures in a book and trying to figure out what was happening. I also like the detailed discussion and demonstration of puddle control.

The only area I think that would have been helpful that was not discussed would be a full discussion of how to choose a welding process for a particular project. Oxy-Acetylene welding, we are told, is slow and its heat causes metal distortion. That I can oxy-acetylene weld metals from 1/32" to 4". I have an anticipated project requiring that I weld pipe. From the video I know I can weld it, but it is not necessarily clear that I should oxy-acetylene to do it.

This video is great value for those just learning to gas weld. The saying of "a picture is worth one thousand words" couldn't be more true. All the welding books available just cannot adequately show the formation of the weld puddle and how to dip the rod.

Since this video is intended for beginners, the footage only shows plate in the flat, horizontal and vertical positions. Some footage and pointers on welding tubing would have made this an even better video.

This guy is good. The safty brief is good and good and long. I know the importance and realize you have to cover all the bases but it takes up a bit of time. Other than that; the closeups were great and the camera work fine. All the audio was clear and understandable. I would like to see more of this person in more videos. Got to love the hat. He could have talked more about the type of filler material to use. Overall I think this video was laid out very well and very understandable.

Great DVD.

If you're new or needed a refresher, this is the deal. All the way from safety to set up to technique, including vertical welding is covered. Highly recommended.

This is a good, clean, comprehensive video on Oxy-Acetylene welding steel. The video presentation is very professional (except that the instructor is obviously reading from a prompt the whole time).

No attempts were made to show any other types of Oxy-Act welding/brazing/soldering unfortunately. In fact the instructor describes oxy-acetylene welding of aluminum as pretty much impossible even though people have been doing it for decades.

Good video, clear and concise.

Great weld pool shots, my only complaint is the video does not get into the nitty gritty of imperfect welding conditions. I want to see a caked ,dirty, rusted bar being cleaned up and welded in an uncomfortable position. More of this and the vid would have been stellar. Good basics and safety though.

Pros: - Mr. Bleile is clear-spoken, obviously an expert, and even a little funny - good coverage of equipment, setup, safety, and techniques - good sound and video, especially considering closeups of process - cohesive, linear, and appropriately dense, presentation - worth the constant rewinding to capture notes

Cons: - doesn't repeat anything, so the safety info must be believed the first time (believe it!)

Summary: hits the spot for beginning welder

I really got a lot out of this DVD. I've done a lot of reading on oxy-ac welding, but there's really no substitute for seeing it done. The DVD is well-photographed, which is great. I'm hoping that someday I can get my puddles to look half as nice as Steve's.

As with all the videos in the Steve Bleile series, this one is first rate. It covers the basics all the way from equipment set-up to out-of-position welding. Jam packed with good information that can also be applied to other types of welding. If your curious about oxy-acetelene welding, get it. If your going to try it, this is a must have.

Very good video! I taught myself how to gas weld by reading books and online forums, but this video was worth every penny to make sure I was doing it right. It shows puddle very clearly. I was always mystified by impurities in the puddle but I found an answer here. Highly recommended!

This is an excellent introduction to gas welding with good camera work showing torch work and welds being made. However, the material will seem fairly basic if you have done any gas welding at all. Most of the actual welds shown are not much more than moving a puddle across a piece of plate. Nonetheless, the imgaes are high quality and they show good technique. But there isn't much in the video to help with more demanding welds other than passing comments.

So, if you are new to gas welding, this video will help you. If you know the basics and are looking to increase your skill level, you may not find much to take away beyond the inspiration provided by the great images of skillful gas welds being made.

I am new to welding and this video gave me all I needed to get off to a good start - safety, tip sizes, filler sizes, flame adjustment, pressure settings, puddle control, good and poor welds, types of weld joints, welding horizontally, vertically and overhead. This and the companion "cutting" video are excellent!

This one was okay. It covered the utter basics -- utterly thin steel-on-steel. I would like to see one that covered thin-to-thick and brazing (but, come to think of it, the title is about welding, isn't it?). I'd give it a B.

This video covers oxy-acetylene welding of steel. It does not cover welding that requires flux (Aluminum, Stainless) or brazing. The video is all excellent quality and shows the bead well. The discussion was very informative. For example, he suggests choosing a welding rod size based on how much heat it will take from the bead. He then demonstrates using a rod that is too large or too small. The only part I didn't like was his tip size chart. Different brands of torches are inconsistent on what a 00, 1, or other tip size is.

This is a good DVD. He demonstrates the basic technique, and shows enough about types of weld joints to make general repairs.

Learning what is presented here won't qualify you to be a welder, for sure - because weld inspection and testing, comparisons of oxy-acet welding with other welding techniques are not made, and there are no comparisons of oxy-acet weld joint types with weld strengths.

Two things I learned from this show: you absolutely must wear goggles to see the molten weld pools, and before you repair something with a permanent weld, practice with similar pieces of scrap until you are sure your weld will be good on what you want to repair.

I am right handed, although can weld more easily by holding the torch with my left and and the welding rod in my right hand; I use the cutting torch the same way and some people might find it essier to reverse hands, also

While most of the video seemed to be about oxy-acetylene safety, I appreciate that focus. Having read a couple of books on oxy-act welding and having done some simple welds, this video shed new light on what a book could not describe. The reasons for losing the flame or popping were easy to understand along with planning and troubleshooting welds. I would recommend this video.

This is a very good video for people wanting to get started with welding. The video shots of the actual process are very clear. The instructor is clear, concise, thorough and likable. Welding "out-of-position" (vertical and horizontal on a vertical face) is also demonstrated.

In welding it's all about controlling the puddle of molten metal that you are working with. That skill will serve you well in MIG, TIG and stick. Oxy-Acetylene welding is very underrated. In World War II some of the greatest aircraft of all times were built out of stainless steel, aluminum, chrome-moly steel and other alloys that were all welded perfectly with oxy-acetylene. And it's great for auto body restoration and fabrication.

For a beginner, it gives basic info on welding only. No information on brazing or cutting with the torch. I did pick up some usefull information on regulator pressures and tip sizes. Very good camera work and professional presentation. I would recommend it if you are new to gas welding or just want a refresher course.
