Milling on the Drill Press

...with Jose Rodriguez

Milling how-to video: Milling on the Drill Press by Jose Rodriguez 4_bulb Review this video!

Are you tired of avoiding machine projects simply because you do not own or have access to a milling machine? Learn some of the secrets to successful milling techniques utilizing your existing lathe and drill press. ...wait! milling on a drill press? Jose has been doing it for years now, and has been getting great results. Watch a Taig micro lathe mill a work piece that's mounted on the cross slide...then watch the Taig mill a work piece by using the vertical milling accessory. See a modified micro drill press used to convert the machine into a small 3-in-1 machining center. By the end of the tape, you'll see the Taig lathe used as a milling machine, operating on a block of steel which is being held in a home-shop-created vise!

NOTE: this video was previously released as 'Milling Without a Milling Machine'. If you've seen that video, this is the same thing, just with an update title from Jose.

This is another really good video by Jose and one that I would highly recommend to someone who's just starting to aquire some metalworking tools as it might help you get started milling without having to plop down the cash for a milling machine. It's classic Jose, and it's well done. The information is good as always and it's a great place to start. I rented this one and the one on milling on the drill press, I even converted my drill press into a milling machine just like Jose's, but I find myself milling on the lathe more often than not. The drill press works ok but it doesn't have near the rigidity of the lathe. The downside of course is that on the lathe you're limited to the travel moreso than on the drill press. I'd start with this one and then if you already have the drill press and want to you can convert it to add some more range, but as I said between the two more often than not I end up milling on the lathe.

This is the first video by this fellow (is his name Jose?) that I have seen. He's not exciting or even particularly personable, but the information is clearly presented and the video answered a fundamental question that I'd had, i.e., whether or not to buy/make a milling attachment for my old Craftman lathe. Because of the information and demonstrations on this video, the answer is definitely yes.

If you are thinking about trying this it is good introduction. Jose could have made the camerawork a bit better with someone else helping, but for apparently being shot all by himself with a tripod, its OK. Many shorts are way too long in showing th various types of operations and cuts you can do, but good if you have never done anything like milling before. Overall a great starter video.

O.K. for an amateur video. He does demonstrate milling on a drill press and touches on how he converts a cheap bench-top drill press to a pretty functional mill. He could have gone into much more detail on the actual conversion process. There is mention , but no concise description or footage, of filling the post with concrete, epoxying the head to the column after precise alignment, boring the spindle to accept a depth guage, etc. The DVD did not provide a detailed step by step of the conversion process like I expected. Just barely enough info for a resourceful tinkerer to accomplish this conversion.

Aside from content the video quality is not great. Kind of fuzzy.

The DVDs are definitely valuable, especially to someone like me who is hoping to gather enough information before making a purchase. I plan on purchasing this DVD.

This is the 1st DVD I rented from Smartflix. It was delivered on time and was packaged very well. The DVD is very good at showing you the how to's of milling with a drill press. Anyone interested in this should see this DVD.

Very good information. Shows what you can do with a little creative thinking and patience. I enjoyed the tutorial on using the center and edge finders and the other mill setup procedures such as using the indexing jig. I'm just a beginning metalworker and this video was ideal for me.

Thanks to Jose for making video demos available, but this one was boring. I literally fell asleep during the first two hours. The second two, bonus hours, contained some good tips for the hobby machinist. The problem is that the material is dated and should be updated to reflect currently available equipment.

Informative, for a novice it really gave me hope that I might be able to mill on my drill press. I think he did a good job but the camera work could have been better and he should have done it with some kind of scrip.

As a new metal worker I found this transition of a drill press to a milling machine quite interesting. I learned a great deal about milling which I didn't know.
