This is what a video on the basics of smithing should be. It covers a little of everything when working with pewter but doesn't bog you down with so much information that you want to scream. The only draw back is the lack of closeups of the process that is being done. They really should get the camera in a location that they can use a lens that bring the subject right up close and make use of all the big screen TV's out there. The sections on casting, soldering are well worth the viewing alone.

An excellent introductory view of metal spinning with pewter being the metal of interest. Pewter is an ideal metal for spinning, having all the requisite elongation non work hardening features. While this DVD does not explain in detail the whys and hows of metal movement in the spinning process, it gives an enticing intro to the art by showing the attractive resulting pewter ware.

One is left with the thought that he could himself successfully tackle a project and complete it. You have watched the process and it is not impossible. Several colleges have websites to which one can then refer for additional information on spinning other metals. This, however, is hands on, in motion, to a finished product, complete to soldering up a finished pewter chalis, tankard, and other pieces. Some pewter casting is included.

Any craftsperson would enjoy watching this whether they ever do any metal spinning or not. It makes you want to try it. I have the setup, but have never tried it. I will now. I have the confidence.

Smartflix makes the whole rental process totally easy, no hastle, as you would yourself wish. Hats off to them!!

Great on pewter spinning - lots of info, but pewter smithing is more than spinning and a bit of casting. I'll have to find out what the next one in the series covers. I did enjoy the spinning info - much more detailed than anything else I've seen yet.

DVD was very informative although the camera work could be improved by having more close-ups and better positioning of the camera. The only problem was the DVD was not viewable after Chapter 5 due to excessive scratching. This was in the area of the soldering and polishing, something that I really wanted to see. I notified SmartFlix and I believe they are sending another DVD.
