This video has the look and feel of being home made but that's where it's short comings stop. It's well organized and is filled with lots of information on coppersmithing and a great demonstration of flame painting. Definitely worth a watch.
I found the video very very informative. I love coppersmithing. After one week I created a fairly good facsimile of the process described. This a unique art and you would do well to reveiw this video.
This video isn't about copper smithing in the sense of bending, forming, shaping and joining copper as with other smithing styles. It is about making decorative items and garden art that uses heat discoloration for the coloring effect. The artist says in the video that he discovered this technique. I have it listed in a 1961 Art Metals school shop text book. Again, this video shows too much of the artist and not enough of the art. He does get around to covering the process from start to finish - what they do and the type of projects are gone over with a passing showing on the video. At the end, they show a number of things they do but only in passing. It is good overview of coloring copper with heat for making Home and Garden type decorations. Anybody with a little shop experience should be able to duplicate and take it to the next level in a lot less time then he keeps saying on the DVD.
Great video, getting all the stuff together to give it a go. Wish it would have had more on how they cleaned the copper.
Enough information to get you started with flame painting. It looks like something you will have to practice a lot to get good at it. A little bit of info on copper joining. Very little on copper forming.
Great DVD.
Very informative video for anyone interested in this craft. Valuable information about the type of acetylene torch to use, the type of solder to use that will blend with the color of copper, the gauge of copper used by the presenter, and the type of laquer to use to protect the work from oxidation. Video includes an excellent demonstration of coloring copper with flame. This video covers all the basics to get you started.
An excellent introduction to basic coppersmithing and flame coloring techniques. Highly recommended!
It was great - I had a problem with the first one and you sent the replacement right away, which worked fine. Keep up the good work!
Excellent, well worth it!!!!
***** Five stars.
I'm giving this one a rating of 4. It would have a rating of 3; however, there were some tips that saved it. I liked the precise information on the soldering rod to use as well as some time-saving tips on cutting copper. The flame-painting was short but still worth the rental.
As other reviewers have mentioned, there isn't anything about forming copper, which is what one pictures in one's mind when reading the words, "Copper Smithing" in a title. While he actually solders a few joints, the process isn't explained for diddly. If I didn't already know how to solder copper, and if I was expecting to learn it here, then I would have a few mistakes ahead of me given this instruction.
All in all, it's worth a rental. It wouldn't be worth buying by any stretch of the imagination. It is, of course, worth renting for the flame painting and the aforementioned tips.
Informative not only regarding flame painting, but also material and equipment to use. I'd like to see more from this author.
Thanks
There is enough information here to get the creative juices started and get the artisan off in the right direction. I think a good imagination could start here and find some really interesting directions to head off into. Someone with even a little bit of oxy-acetylene experience should have no trouble with this. However, if you have no experience, view the video then talk to the folks at your welding supply store. This video won't tell you anything about gas pressures and that sort of thing.
You can do it! However: I would ask that you be a bit more attentive to safety than you might be led to feel necessary from this video. If I were a beginner, I would not be as comfortable as Skip is doing torch work on a wooden bench, surrounded by wooden fixtures, and dropping molten metal on ??? floor. He did mention cotton clothing. But, I think he should have hinted at leather boots for the cutting segment. It's second nature to him -- might not be to a novice.
Bottom line: I liked this video and would recommend it as a jumping off point for someone who has an interest in this sort of artwork. If you are totally unfamiliar with these processes, just talk with some people in industry so you don't get hurt.
Wonderful, wonderful DVD; just a little too long.
Amazing! I've watched many an art DVD and was so impressed with this one I've actually logged on to rate this.
This is an absolutely excellent DVD! I learned so much and would highly recommend it to anyone interested in Copper working.
