Le Gouter (The Snack)

...with Johnnie Liliedahl

Painting: Oil how-to video: Le Gouter (The Snack) by Johnnie Liliedahl 5_bulb Review this video!

Filmed over a period of weeks, this video explores the Flemish method of Old Master Painting, a technique Bouguereau is known to have practiced. Also included is an illustration of how to prepare the canvas in advance of painting to create a ground that makes the final surface more painterly.

Watch as Johnnie demonstrates the drawing technique of squaring up and free-handing the drawing by using a grid method of measuring. She takes you through the bistre drawing underpainting, underpainting glazes and finally the opaque application of paint, and explanation of the ebauche technique that Bouguereau practiced.

Very well crafted and informative video. Teaches the technique of this great master, but has a more painterly approach. Beautiful results.

I am an experienced painter and I found this video to be very good indeed. It is not for the beginner, more like intermediate painter. Using the graph method and Old Master Technique.

The palette is clearly labeled and paint mixtures labeled and numbered so that the viewer knows exactly which colors are being used. It is possible to see the exact brush strokes and how the paint is applied. The artist used a color unfamiliar to me: transparent golden ochre. This gives a wonderful golden glow to flesh colors which is more natural than the intense ruddiness of many flesh mixtures. The procedure used is an old one and requires weeks to paint because of time required for drying between the many steps of glazing, undercoat, opaque paint application. It is worth the effort and I want to try it. The procedure is very different from today's premier coup technique.

I found the instruction to be very clear and valuable. My only problem with this video was it made me very sleepy as it was very quiet. Maybe some background music?

I thought this was an excellent dvd. Liliedahl makes it very clear. I especially liked the skin tones she mixes. There is a information sheet enclosed that gives even more detail about what colors she uses to mix her flesh tones and where on the face she uses these. It definitely made me a better portrait painter.

I think Le Gouter is fine and J. Lilliedahl clearly has a lot of knowledge to share. The presentation is hampered by not having the original print to view hence, paint application and her decisions come from a level of abstraction that require some getting used to. Her practice of narration off camera rather than a personal presnetation style is more than a bit off putting. I don't know if I would recommend Le Gouter since I'm not sure it comes close to Bouguereau's method.

Finally, I know you rent disc 1 and disc 2 separately, but it makes little sense from my viewpoint to do so. Having had now 3 rental experiences, I find the process painless and well designed. However, having one disc without the other is a waste of time and both are necessary to understand the lessons offered in its full context. IF you are "unbundling" the programs for a marketing reason, I would forget it and be more straightforward in your approach.

[ SmartFlix note: we offer customers the option of renting either disk, or renting both disks at the same time (the "rent the set" option). When you rent the whole set at once, you also save 15% off the rental price. ]

I loved the DVD I only wish I had the time that I could have painted along with it! She made portraits look so easy.

An excellent dvd for any level - my students got as much out of it as I did. I plan to rent it again.
