This project explores the 19th century painting techniques of master painter John W. Waterhouse. It examines old painting techniques such as the imprimatura tonal wash, combined with Pre-Raphaelite, brilliant underpainting glazes, opaque overpainting brushwork, drybrush, glazing and scumbling. Particular attention is paid to the use of transparent vs. opaque paint in the creation of the intense coloration in the girl's dress
Even beginning studens can be successful with the video and printed materials provided for reference.

Johnny is easily the best instructor I have ever had. Her talent as a art educator is excellent. The video was well thought out, so well I felt like I was in her studio and able to watch each brush stroke! Absolutely The best!
This video was well worth the time and money. She's a wonderful teacher, very precise approach to a painting. Can hardly wait to rent it again in the future.
This set has some great tips. She covers the underpainting, but more importantly the skintone block-in and then the blending step. This was new info to me and I can't wait to put this knowledge to use. I had always been aware of this technique but to see it done really is illuminating. The other thing that is very useful is the analysis of the warm/cool dynamic to create the illusion of depth as well as the turning of form. Highly recommended!!
This video is very professionally done. She uses a technique where she paints the various colors in particular areas and then blends them all together. It's somewhat of a paint by number technique. I found the whole process a little tedious to watch, very slow moving. Its a fascinating technique though, with impressive results.
Sometimes it still amazes me how she gets those colors to work like they do. I'm still not adept at getting mine to work so well, but I've learned more from Johnnie Liliedahl than any one else. Her videos are very professional and of great quality.
I own it and I feel Johnnie Liliedahl is a phenominal artists. She explains why she chooses the colors she does and step by step directions starting with the tracing of the picture, the underglazing and the colors. She shows you what colors she uses and how to mix to make them. I love this DVD.
