Portrait Drawing in Charcoal

...with Johnnie Liliedahl

Pastel & Charcoal how-to video: Portrait Drawing in Charcoal by Johnnie Liliedahl 5_bulb Review this video!

Learning to Draw Likenesses. If you have ever attempted to draw a portrait and failed, believing that capturing a likeness requires a certain artistic "gift" of drawing, this video will dispel that notion forever. Drawing a likeness is a matter of being able to accurately measure what you see in an individual's face that makes them different from everyone else. What makes them unique is how they differ from the "average" face.

This face is explained, drawn and measured for you in terms that any aspiring artist can understand. An entire section is devoted to drawing individual features of eyes, nose, and mouth in full-face, 3/4 view, and profile. Then, a live model is set-up and her portrait is drawn using the methods and measurements shown in the video.

This video is a must if you aspire to draw and paint faces.

I learned a lot from this video, from the general outline of a portrait to the individual features. I recommend renting both DVDs because Ms Lilliedahl ends DVD 1 with drawing the eye and DVD 2 continues with all the other facial features.

This is a marvelous way to learn how to draw a portrait in charcoal. Ms Lilliedahl's plentiful knowledge is shared in a relaxed and informative way. She shows full face, 3/4 and profile poses and how to measure and draw each feature in those positions. I recommend it highly and suggest renting it as a Set as the first DVD flows directly into the second.

Johnnie Liliedahl is brilliant! she is just an all around artist and no matter what medium she is using her work is superb. I learned so much from this series...both Disc 1 and 2 are necessary for the full set of information. This is jammed with great instruction, she's so organized and clear and takes you by the hand, step by step. I LOVE learning from her. I get the concepts and can develop what meager skills I have with ease. A++

This is a good DVD and I highly recommend it. The best aspect is the presentation by the artist. I have viewed other art lessons by excellent artists who had difficulty in teaching their work. I hope Johnnie makes additional lessons of this type available.
