Many painters are stumped when it comes to figuring out which colors to use for different ethnic and complexion types in portrait painting. While the palette choices of colors to include is important, the concept of color temperature and value is far more critical to capturing the specific coloring of an individual. Johnnie has chosen two models with very different skin colors and values to show you that BOTH can be painted from the same array of fleshtone mixtures, even though they appear to be unrelated by complexion.
Throughout this video, Johnnie offers tips and suggestions to capturing any portrait likeness with facility and truth to the model's unique features. Enrich your own knowledge of portrait painting by learning how simple it can be to switch from one skin type to another.

This is a great DVD to watch. Anyone interested in painting portraits should see how well Liliedath paintd different skin tones. Step by step demostrations thatare very easy to follow. I recommend it. She is a great artist.
This DVD is full of very useful information explained in clear language.
This artist is just terrific! I hope you get more of her series on smartflix. She is so incredibly informative and generous with her information. She is a true teacher in my opinion. Got lots of great information about use of color, explanation of the terms used (half tones etc), love her limited palette and how simply she was able to cool down a color or warm it up, planes on the faces, softening edges, application, and placement. Two portraits on one canvas of 2 different women... This was just a terrific learning session. Definitely rent it!
Liliedahl is consistently thorough in her explanations on color and approach, easy to follow, and reinforces her basic concepts throughout her presentation. A very classroom-like approach, particularly useful to beginners.
I was hoping for fleshtones of more than two races.
It was a very interesting contrast with Johnnie doing the Caucasian model in the same portrait with the black model. I would not have guessed how many of the same color combos were used in the flesh tones of such opposite models. Johnnie of course is a great teacher and easy to listen to. Overall of very good video for people interested in portraits.
