Drawing the Head in Oil

...with Johnnie Liliedahl

Painting: Oil how-to video: Drawing the Head in Oil by Johnnie Liliedahl 5_bulb Review this video!

When painting from the live model, artists need to know how to draw the head in the medium they are painting with, rather than charcoal and pencil. This video explores not only the theory and measurements to determine likenesses of the model in three views, but also how to control the medium of oil paint during the drawing process.

Three head views are fully demonstrated, using the live model, graphic illustrations to capture the likeness, and full verbal narration of the painting/drawing process. This video is a must for painters wanting to venture into portrait or character painting.

This video goes over painting the head monotone in 3 different angles (full face, 3/4 view and profile. I thought it was a great video for teaching values. I will use this method of starting my color paintings more often now. Well worth renting

Excellent video. Shows you practically the entire process (you could tell a few fudgings of the paint were left out to save some time).

The DVD provides multiple views of a model from life. Showing the process from start to finish is a helpful, realistic lesson in learning to do the same. This skill is vital to learn, and this DVD is terrific at teaching it.

Again, Johnnie just gets better and better! She covers all the basics and shows you - literally takes you by the hand - and shows you step by step how to draw the head of this stunning live model in oil. The three poses are so helpful to see the correct angles (frontal, 3/4 and profile. Her renderings are so beautiful and her instruction is superb! I can't praise her enough!

I thought this video was excellent. I have been using charcoal to draw my models on canvas. Then I would have to spray it with a sealer, and then begin the oil painting. This video taught me to begin with painting. It also explains a lot about the proportions and how they change when the model is full on, profile, or three quarter view. Really learned a lot.
