Continue the exploration of painting truths and visual relationships in the study of light and how it determines the shadows in every painting composition you attempt. Learn the so-called rules; then learn when and why to break them.
The natural world exists with certain immutable givens: gravity, sunlight, seasons, phases of the moon, etc. These are obvious to everyone. There are other, more subtle, givens in our natural world that can make or break a beginning painter's work if not truthfully observed. Knowledge of the rules that nature imposes on light, shadow, and form will elevate your painting attempts to new levels.
Some of the questions that will be explored and answered are:
- What is meant by a "shadow"?
- Are cast shadows and shadow sides the same?
- Are shadows always cool?
- If not, why?
- Can you have different temperature shadows in the same painting?
- How does light affect the color of the shadows?
- What determines the core shadow temperature?
- Can I have warm lights and warm shadows?
- Can I have cool lights and cool shadows?
(about 75 minutes)

This teacher does the best videos! She tells you everything you need to know. I find her work, to be the most informative of all the companies doing art videos.
This is an amazing lecture. I learned some new terms, open shadow for example. Don't hesitate to pick this one up.
Material was presented well by the instructor. Very informative, however, the quality of the DVD was under par. The voice did not match up with the movement of the mouth, and this made it very difficult to watch, there were also times when the display would blur a bit. Overall, I learned from the material and am not unhappy that I rented it.
This DVD on light and shadow has much information to help with painting landscapes. But for me the almost straight lecture type of presentation puts me too sleep. If you can stay awake there is much too learn.
By far the best Art instructor making DVD's. I want to eventually take some real workshops from Johnnie herself. She explains everything. And is extremely organized.
Excellent. Although set up as a lecture, not a "watch the artist paint", this is a video of basic stuff and should be learned by all artists....especially the beginner. This is a video dealing with the tools of the trade....the science of painting.
This DVD contains information I never received in my basic art classes. Material is presented in an understandable manner. I have ordered another DVD presentation by this wonderful teacher/artist.
As always Johnnie Lilledahl you learn a lot from each of her videos. I have quite a few of her videos so some of the stuff in this one was in those. It is worth renting.
Fantastic! I learned tips that improved my paintings immediately. It was like taking a college course.
That was very good, but it will be better yet if it has more practice examples.
Very informative; somewhat technical for a mere amateur; a lot of information to retain. A short printed summary would have enhanced the experience.
There was an awful lot of talking rather than painting. It would have helped to have more demonstration of the author's points
Johnnie Lilliedahl's instruction is the best, and this DVD is no exception. Very thorough in her explanations and illustrations, and I found this particular subject to be extremely helpful - one of those eye-openers. Stuff you've always heard about is clarified so you really understand it.
Excellent video to get you truly observing and correctly rendering shadows in a variety of situations. Watched it twice before I returned it.
These are all sub-standard in terms of content.
This dvd is nothing more than a talking head who is very impressed with herself and reads from a written script. Bad!
This was an excellent informational dvd. At my age it was a little difficult to retain the spoken word in memory. I'm more a visual person. I took notes and she does print the important points so you can copy. There were several very good demonstrations to determine light and shadow. I would recommend it to anyone who is interested in learning more about when to use warm or cool colors.
