This first video explores Color. It explains basic color relationships that will free you from brand-specific, tubed color mixtures forever. You will learn, simply by observation, what a color is by its generic definition and what colors are necessary to mix it. Instructions will be included that will show you how to mix any color you desire. You will never again have to buy browns, greens, or other earth colors.

This second video builds on the information provided in Vol. 1, "Understanding Color", and explores the role color plays in creating form, depth, and excitement in paintings. You'll learn about temperature, value, and intensity with respect to how they affect different aspects of your paintings, as well as look at how you select a color scheme. We'll also see how you can use the color panels, developed in Vol. 1, to give you precise mixtures for the components of a painting.
Discussion includes aerial perspective (creation of depth of space in landscapes through the use of color), how the color of the light affects color choices, the creation of form with color instead of value, how to use temperature and intensity, and uses of transparent and opaque paints.

I have become a big Johnnie Liliedahl fan, as her Illumination series is well thought out, well written and clearly presented.
She has helped me reframe and give new meaning and use to information that I already knew. In addition, she presents new facts clearly.
The Understanding Color video, she discusses why she has chosen 9 colors out of the hundreds available. Her selection involves considering the many characteristics of paints; opacity/transparency, warm/cool, light/dark .
She is full of essential basics that I have found has allowed me to take big steps forward with my painting. Her videos are not "glamorous" brush aerobics, but rather, they are fact rich, well illustrated, clearly presented information. If you are a beginner to intermediate painter, I highly recommend Johnnie Liliedahl's Illumination series.
Wonderfully clear and a must for every beginner on up. What many wonders one can accomplish with just a limited palette is fully explained. Will be using the contents of this leson for years to come.

This lesson by Johnnie Liliedahl is absolutely EXCELLENT! In addition to being a wonderful artist, she also is a talented teacher and is able to get the basics across so that you understand the "Whys" of color. I rate it AAA!

Really good, informative DVDs. I learnt a lot from them. She breaks it all down and explains it in a simple way so even beginners can understand it.
This is a great DVD. Jonnie Liliedahl is a great instructor and in this DVD you will learn a lot of different ways of how to use color. A lot of useful information. I recommend it!
The title of these DVDs is exactly what you get when you watch them. I have read books on this topic but never really got it. The topic seemed a bit dry and confusing when reading it from a book but the pace of the video is just right. If you are a visual learner these is worth renting. To aid in remembering I took a lot of notes.
Getting started in painting and have very little knowledge of mixing colors...this should help me understand...thanks...ed
A REALLY impressive presentation about color. I'd go as far as saying it is the absolute best explanation I have seen thus far (and I've delved into this subject quite a lot). Highly recommended for anyone who wants to understand color theory.
Better than most art instruction dvds. The examples she uses to illustrate her points could honestly be better..but, that is a small criticism. The overall dvd is well presented, solid information all beginning oil painters can use.
Johnnie Liliedahl has the ability to break a complex subject down to its component parts and make the infomation understandable however the first two videos "Color Solutions" and "Understanding Color" are boring. The information contained in the videos is excellent and clearly presented. Although I wanted to review the information, I fell asleep while watching the videos. I would recommend these videos to new painters however intermediate painters with a minimum of color theory would find them difficult to get through.
IF you want a comprehensive basic foundation, this is The Place to start. Hard to find anyone who actually Teaches like that. Highly recommended even for experienced painters as Lilliedahl makes intuitive concepts easy for experienced painters to explain verbally to the novices who hound one for direction.
Excellent DVD! I'm going to recommend that all my students watch this two part series. The information is invaluable whether you are a oil painter or use water based mediums. The instruction is clear and to the point, easy to understand even for the beginner. However, my opinion is that even advanced artists will find these DVD's interesting and learn new tips and tricks for a "simple palette".
Johnnie Liliedahl is so consistently wonderful!! Never a disappointment and never skips anything!She's so thorough and each DVD is just full of useful information if you are a beginner or already knowledgable in the craft. She has quickly become one of my favorite teachers and I continue to look forward to more of her teaching! Rating: EXCELLENT! Definitely study from this true artist and natural teacher!
These two DVDs are a MUST for the beginner painter. You cannot go on without knowing these basics that Johnnie Liliedahl lays out so well. I am so pleased to have discovered her. I feel I can now move on from the plateau I was stuck on.
Really good video for understanding mixing color.
Liliedahl presents a solid color palette foundation, as well as color relationships and functions. Her explanations and examples benefit beginners in particular; however, intermediates can gain by stepping back to review the basics or fill in the gaps.
Presentation is well oriented to both beginners and as a review for the more seasoned, a comprehensible fundamental color theory presentation.
None finer. This is what you need if your going to paint. Far and above pragmatic and I wish I had this when I was in collage.

This was very helpful for me - an absolute beginner - in figuring out what colors to buy. These videos are full of basic, yet essential, concepts. The instruction includes lots of demonstrations at a slow pace.
Both of these teaching DVDs by Johnnie Liliedahl are excellent for those wanting information about colors, blending (what does blend well, what doesn't, and why), and selection. She also shows how to bring depth to a painting, how glazes affect the mood of a picture, and how glazes can give spark and life to a painting. She is an excellent teacher. Her explanations are clear, and her method of building one idea on another is logical and easy to follow.

This is much more than just yellow and blue make green. I was going to skip the first DVD in the series and go right to the second because I thought I knew enough about color, but I'm glad I rented both.
I like how she addresses how transparency of the paint is important in choosing your palette. She's the first artist to tell me exactly which color is the warmest (is it red, is it yellow, is it orange?)and which is the coolest. Lots of good information.
