Johnnie Liliedahl writes:
It has been my experience, in observing beginning painters, that their primary obstacle to creating good paintings is a lack of drawing skills. To me, drawing is that essential ingredient that makes a piece of work worthy of the title "art". Drawing is not only the ability to render something in charcoal, pencil, ink, or paint; it is the ability to see what you are attempting to capture. Then, once you can actually see what is before you, drawing also encompasses the ability to compose what you see. Being able to render the appearance of an object is an important skill, but it is a mistake to think that rendering is all that drawing is about.
Do you want to be a better painter and create your own original compositions, but find yourself at a loss to compose them beautifully? What you are searching for won't be found in most painting classes. The emphasis is more often on color and paint methods and techniques than on composition basics, and rightly so. What you really want to know is founded on sound drawing principles such as those included in this intensive video class. There is so much information to cover that it would be impossible to present it all in one program.

This video continues the study of drawing begun in the previous video in the "Illuminations" series, "Drawing-1 for Painters". Learn how basic shapes can further your understanding of all forms in nature, and how certain natural laws affect the values of any object, regardless of its local value or color.
Packed full of information and observations that every painter should know, Johnnie takes you through the myriad of concerns that every painter must address in any painting: viewpoint, unity and repetition, rhythm and variety, weight and contrast, positive and negative space, contour, value, line and key, The Golden Mean. There are even exercises for you to practice to enhance your imagination and to provide ideas for painting when you can think of no others.
This video is for the novice and experienced painter alike. Since its release, it has had rave reviews for its content and scope and will inspire you to try previously ignored subjects.

I would recommend any Johnnie Liliedahl own videos designed for beginners, as this one is. They are clearly created with a great deal of thought, well scripted, and illustrated. While they are not "glamorous" they are the best sources of good, solid traditional information in an understandable presentation that I have found.
Johnnie knows her "stuff"! Although it does become a little boring and slow at times, she shares all of the important things we should know about drawing before we start trying to paint. I recommend any and all of Johnnie Liliedahl's instructional videos/DVD's,books, etc. She is a fantastic artist and teacher!
Excellent! Wonderful teacher - Basics to landscape drawing - your couldn't do better!
Tedious and done without grabbing ones's interest. Would not rate either of these videos or recommend them to anyone.
Even though this DVD moved slowly it contained very useful information especially for anyone that has trouble with tonal values.
This video was so filled with valuable information presented in a very understandable way by Ms. Liliedahl that I watched it more than once, especially chapters I needed the most for my work. Although I am not an oil painter, I highly recommend her drawing videos for artists working in all mediums.
This was an incredibly comprehensive explanation of the basics of drawing for painters as well as those who draw exclusively or use pastel. Johnnie Lilliedahl teaches well and gives you your money's worth in content. Highly recommended!
Because it is so packed with valuable basic information, I watched this one several times. I am extremely impressed with this art instructor. Learn about lines and masses in the landscape, and how to draw building by 'Pointing Up'. This DVD is full of information a landscape artist absolutely needs to know!
Terrific DVD packed full of solid information to help you become a better painter. I would buy this DVD- it's that good !
I really enjoyed this DVD. I always learn so much from Johnnie's videos but this one was really packed with good information.
Johnnie Liliedahl is an excellent and thorough teacher.
I personally did not like the DVDS. I thought she did to much talking. I did not get anything from the DVDS.
