This video is the next best thing to being able to actually take a class with Philippe Farault. He literally goes step by step so you can follow along (which I did) from the very beginning all the way through to the end. I learned so much from being able to see exactly how he forms the different features--this is the kind of thing you just can't learn from reading about it. This is a great service and I will be renting all the sculpture-related DVD's!

These are great how-to DVD's on sculpting heads. If you’re trying to decide on what DVD's you want to watch to learn sculpture techniques, start here. You won’t be disappointed

I rate this video as fair because it presents an approach to portrait sculpture in the "making dolls" category as opposed to true fine art portraiture or sculpture. I had not been exposed to this kind of work before and found it interesting on that level.

He presents some methods that may prove helpful to the inexperienced or the person who is not interesed in portraits of real people. He does not use a real subject and so is presenting conceptualizations. Nevertheless, his methods are sound.

On a more positive note I did learn a few things and enjoyed seeing this man work.

Absolutely fantastic. As a new ceramic artist these DVDs were - without a doubt - as good as a class. and I can't say enough good words. The presentation is excellent, the video is clean and crisp. Mr. Faraut is a great presenter and amazing artist. The next step for me is to take a seminar from him. Amazing stuff.

This guy is amazing. It's the most simple, straightforward process for sculpting the bust that I've ever encountered.

Both videos were excellent--this guy is amazing, and talks you through the process as he works on the piece, explaining the "hows" and "whys". He also demonstrates common mistakes, and more importantly, how to fix them!

Learned more from both of these dvds than I did in a semester of "life sculpting". Why aren't college professors this good?

He even shows the hollowing out and firing process.

Rent these!

Excellent! The best instructional video I have seen showing sculpturing techniques. I especially like the way everything is broken down into stages. You learn how to sculpt each feature of the face step by step in a very clear manner that inspires you to start working on your own project.

This is, like all of Faraut's DVDs, an invaluable reference for anyone interested in figurative sculpting. In this DVD he shows a refinement of his earlier technique in establishing "planes" of the face early on, then detailing the features. I highly recommend this!

Philippe is the Bob Ross of sculpting. He makes it so easy. A must see for any sculptor novice, or pro. Truly remarkable what the turn of thumb can do to some clay.

Philippe Faraut is one of the best portrait working today, and a great teacher. If you have an opportunity to take a class from him, do it. It's worth every penny and then some.

If you don't have that opportunity, these videos are the next best thing. They have some of the highest production values of any sculpting videos I've seen, and the techniques make many complex aspects much more approachable.

Philippe's book is also indispensable and should be in any sculptor's library.

Excellent sculpting dvd. Perhaps one of the best I have seen. It is professionally filmed and edited. The instructions were clear and easy to follow. Perhaps the best feature of the disc for me was Mr. Faraut demonstrates the common mistakes some students tend to make. He will sculpt the mistake and then show how to correct the mistake. That is extremely beneficial to the artist who wants to grow and become a better artist.

This is the guy to learn from. If you want to learn from a new age fine art Master. I do mean that.

He puts the real teaching into your hands. I wish I had started long ago under him. I would have been much farther in my sculpture.

He actually help not only with process, but you learn key points from a wise and charismatic teacher.

Big thumbs up!

Philippe Faraut's DVD sculpting set Volumes 1 2 and 3 were so good, so clear, so comprehensive, I immediately bought the set. If you can't learn to sculpt from Faraut you are wasting your time anyway. Excellent.

Outstanding! If you can't learn to sculpt from Philippe, you can't learn. Someone mentioned he wasn't sculpting "fine art" but "doll's". This artist can sculpt what ever he wants, dolls, realistic fine art, western art sculpting,I think he could take a ball of bread dough and turn it into a statue of David, he is that good. I rented his first three DVDs and learned more from them than any other instructional DVD I've rented. This guy is good!

THE BEST!! I had just begun to sculpt and took a 3-day workshop with Philippe. I was very concerned as cost was $500 and I was afraid I would not get money worth as I was inexperienced. HE WAS WONDERFUL! Made us all - beginner to pro - gain tremendously. I have all of his videos and each one of these videos is just like taking a 3-day workshop. The quality of the videos is the best I have seen in any art teaching video and Philippe is so great to share all of secretes and talents with his audiences. Learn from the best - he is certainly the best!

I rented Volume 2 and have Volumes 1 and 3 on their way. Philippe is excellent! His techniques are simple to use and create a near flawless effect. The camera is angled very well so you never get awkward moments of seeing nothing but hand and unlike said in a previos review he DOES use live subjects (you can see them in the background, though the main piece is from a photo) and recommends that is what you do. This is not only a great way to learn portrait sculpture but he also mixes in bits of anatomy as he sculpts so you can get a general idea of the construction of the skull and the muscles involved in different expressions. He really is the best there is on the subject. I have no experience in sculpting the human form and I watched the video through once, then a second time trying to mimic him and even with no experience I came out with a very good human likeness, just off the bat. A must see for anyone interested in sculpting the face.

I would recommend this video, I am a self taught sculptress, Faraut helped me with a lot of interesting tips. It has been a long time, I am looking forward to putting my new skills to the test and will order the other DVD's in this series. He gives tips at the end about adapting your creation into the form of a doll if you so choose. This DVD is not about doll making by no means... it is about sculpting and helping you to become a better sculptor.

I would highly recommend viewing these videos. They are informative and give great instruction on anatomy of the face and expressions, which would take years of observation on your own. These are the best sculpting videos I have seen.

I consider Philippe Ferault the most wonderful teacher I ever encountered. His concise explanations and clear demonstration of his method of sculpting is as supreme as his artistic talent in creating those marvelous portraits. I selected the video to get more insight in the form and construction of the head. It was a hit! I am a portraitist myself but in painting. I recommend these videos warmly for any painter. I haven't find comparable instruction in the drawing or painting section. The video team did a very professional job also. Thumbs up!

It would be hard for me to imagine a DVD that does a better job of explaining and showing the art of Clay Sculpture. I was extremely impressed with the video, to the point that I decided to buy 2 of the 3 videos and 2 of his books.
