The video seemed to be geared more towards new construction than performing a retrofit installation.

The new construction method is always a preferred method which is why it is more cost and time effective to perfrom a whole house wiring at this stage.

Good for basics; however if you are into meat and potatoes of performing an installation, spend some time either reading or even volunteering with a wiring contractor friend or acquaintance.

Book or self-study is nice but there is no real substitute for practical hands-on knowledge and experience.

This video is one of two videos that cover the features and benefits of installing broadband and A/V cabling in your home. This video is meant to be watched prior to the one on audio and video. Before renting this video, I really wasn't sure what "structured wiring" meant, but I certainly do now. If your desire is to "automate" your home, this video will NOT provide the info you're looking for. Home automation (controlling lights, appliances, etc. via the internet) is a different endeavor than the projects conducted on this series. But watching this series may help you understand how they differ.

I'm planning a major remodel that will include advanced wiring for the latest technology, and I hope to do the entire installation myself. This video has done a lot to prepre me for the task. This series is sponsored by Leviton and promotes their products exclusively. From what I've read, Leviton is one of the major players in the structured wiring market and their products do appear to be sufficient for the task. However, I tend to check out their competitors offerings before I begin my own installation. I enjoyed the video and I'm really glad that Smartflix is making this kind of material available.

Good introducty material; but, you will need to purchase the publisher's more technical instruction DVDs to complete a real life wiring project.

We are in the process of building a house. The builder told us that we would have the opportunity to run any wiring (satellite tv, internet, etc.) after the electrical and plumbing went in. I rented this DVD many months ago and found it very informative and decided that this was something I could do myself. I knew since this house is located 150 miles from where we presently live that it would be a little more challenging. I was referred to someone that installs structured wiring as a side line and I was in the process of coordinating hiring it done when I was informed that the electrical and plumbing were in and the builder was ready to insulate and drywall. This really left me no choice but to do the installation myself.

I would highly recommend this DVD to anyone who is contemplating attempting structured wiring. It is very informative, very well done and I can think of several things I would have stumbled with if I had not watched this DVD. However they make the job look a lot easier than it really is. For instance on the pre-wire it appears that they start the job in the morning and finish up in the afternoon sometime. Well it took me almost 3 full days and that was with 2 helpers. But even with that, I'm glad I did it myself and that I had this DVD to guide me.
