Vinyl Windows Made Easy

...with John Rocco

Housebuilding how-to video: Vinyl Windows Made Easy by John Rocco 2_bulb Review this video!

If you don't know how to install vinyl windows & sliding glass doors, but you have experience working with basic tools such as a drill, caulking gun, tape measure, etc., you might be surprised how easy it is to learn how to install vinyl windows & sliding glass doors yourself. You can literally save thousands on labor costs, especially if you're planning on installing replacement windows and doors throughout your home. "Vinyl Windows Made Easy" shows the process of replacing an aluminum sliding window in Southern California using the "retrofit" replacement window frame, and a double hung replacement of a wood sash window. Every aspect of the project is covered in detail, from measuring to removal, from installation to trim and caulk. There is an additional 30 minutes describing replacements on brick veneer and aluminum or wood siding.

There are websites that offer "free" installation advice, but if you don't have any experience, it's virtually impossible for someone to tell you how to do something by describing it with words. There really is no better way to learn how to do something than to watch someone do it. If you just have a question or two, then the free sites might be all that you need. "Vinyl Sliding Doors Made Easy" shows a complete tear out and installation of a Sliding Glass Door in Southern California using the "Retrofit" Style frame.

This author wasted too much time during the first 30 minutes promoting how to get an accurate price quote from his site. I assume this production was more of a sales effort than a technical production that could assist the homeowner who wants to tackle this type of project. There appears to be a 30 minute addition to the end of the demo that is weakened by bad lighting and the lack of a "hands on" project. Pointing and describing what you should do is not a substitute for an actual window replacement project. Also - the on-site window replacement project is based on California window design and not typical of Mid-West and East Coast residential construction. There must be better examples of instructional DVDs that cover this subject...

Since I have one of these California stucco houses, this was just the video I wanted. While the production isn't high-end, the author does a good job explaining the steps and considerations.

Buyer beware that this DVD is encoded in a recent format of MPEG that isn't supported by older DVD players or computer DVD readers. Your's may be OK, but I wasn't able to get this to work on 3 of my DVD players.

Not very useful for me. Concept of shooting the video at the job site was good however, Southern California housing construction and Northeastern housing are very different. Window type chosen was no representative of normal eastern housing and what I see in Pennsylvania. Price quotes on windows and measurement techniques with an explanation of basic fractions arithmetic could have been left out. Video was better suited for a person that owns a small one story concrete block and stucco low income home in southern LA that does not own or know how to use a portable drill.

I did not learn anything I didn't already know.
