Hammerforming Techniques

...with Ron Covell

Sheetmetal how-to video: Hammerforming Techniques by Ron Covell 5_bulb Review this video!

Two of the best-known names in metalshaping have teamed up to teach you the ins and outs of the hammerforming process. Hammerforms are very easy to make, and they enable you to create parts that have the look and accuracy of die-stamped parts. They allow even beginning metalworkers to produce parts they can be proud of. Ten different hammerforming operations are demonstrated, from a simple tank top to a beautiful rolled edge detail on a complicated pontoon fender for a Bugatti. The two Ron's bring over 70 years of combined experience to the viewers, and you'll see how their different styles of working with metal compliment each other. This video has striking close-up shots that bring you close to the action, and clear descriptions of all aspects of the hammerforming process.

Metal working has become my hobby so maybe I'm a little biased. I think this video is great. Like all Ron Covell videos it's clear and well presented and you won't need all sorts of expensive tools to apply the techniques taught. Ron Covell splits time on this video with Ron Fournier who is also an excellent metal working resource. If you're interested in getting started in metal shaping this would be a great video to watch.

For the beginner, the intermediate and the advanced metalworker...

Nothing here is beyond the beginner's ability, while the intermediate and advanced metalcrafter might learn a few tricks or get a remedial brush-up.

If you own any of Fournier's books, this DVD supports them with moving pictures and verbal explainations.

The two Rons share some insanely-great information on this DVD.

A good video by two very knowledgeable metal men. Good lighting, good camerawork. The instructors do a great job of explaining how and why they do what they do. Great stuff!

This is a great place to start. Very informative. Covers in great detail the process to make the part you might just need. Airframe and metalworking professionals will benefit from this instruction

Excellent detail. Good camera shots and lighting. Plenty of different examples. It is a good learning video.

The only thing I found lacking is an explanation of how many of the items related to a vehicle. The authors assumed with many examples that the viewer understood how the item is actually used.

This is a very awesome video. It is probably nothing that anyone with experience in hammerforming would need to rent, but a very good choice for the inexperienced. I was very impressed with the quality of the video and sound as well.

For what they were teaching its a good video. Basically its just hammering metal around wooden molds. They don't tell you enough about the design aspect of mold making in my opinion. I may be biased. It just wasn't what I was looking for and anyone could do this on their own. No secrets given. All straight forward stuff that you could figure out on your own in my opinion.

Very good, the price of the rent is worth it just for the secret bondo forming trick.

I liked the video but most of the techniques rely on your ability to make wood bucks as jigs to build your sheet metal forms on. Ron Covell's latest video on English wheel techniques is truly his finest. He goes into great detail explaining how metal moves as well as showing techniques with the English wheel.

This is an easy one to review . The two guys on this video know their stuff. I learned a great deal from them in this presentation. I rate this DVD tops.

Enjoyed the video. Techniques were explained and demonstrated clearly. learned about stretching and shrinking and overworking. Would have liked a more in depth discussion on materials used (brass, aluminum, steel) and how they are formed differently...i/e. steel must require a more durable form or buck than brass. More discussion on what type of hammers to use, or is hard plastic ok for most everything? How the forms or bucks are created would add very much to the understanding of the techniques, but maybe that is a large enough topic for a separate video.

Nicely organized and with a realistically stepped set of demonstrations, I learned quite a bit, adding some new wrinkles to experience in hand (from coppersmithing). Also useful was to see that stuff I'd learned the hard way, through much T-and-E, eventually was on the right track, and so was a confidence builder.

I would've liked more on stretching and shrinking in the formation of compound curves (usually referred to as 'saddle shapes') than was offered.

As with all Rons videos, this is full of good information. If you've been metal shaping a while you may already know quite a bit of this info but there's still something in here for everyone.
