The best we have ever seen for hands-on, "how-it's-done" checkering instructions. Covers surface prep, pattern layout, tools needed and how to use them, making cuts, deepening lines, cutting borders, maintaining straight lines and so on.

Good DVD I learned a lot. xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx
It was informative to a degree, but some of what he said was hard to follow. It gave me the encouragement I needed to try my hand at checkering. It's harder than it looks, that's for sure.
I thought this was the most informative and easy to understand video on checkering I've seen. I would highly recommend it to anyone even if they just want to gain a better understanding of the art.
Content is very good. Video quality is terrible - I wish there was a high quality version.
I found this to be a very imformative video that has much more detailed instruction than what is out there on the market. Quality of the DVD I rented was poor; once it played, it was very good.
The anouncer should have done ALL the narration. The craftsman may have known his stuff but is not a good speaker. The professional narrator, however, is. Also, I've looked all over the web and I can't find the tool handle type that was used in the video.
I did like the video, though. It gives a good intro to checkering and the techniques necessary to start in this hobby.
This was the first how-to video I've seen about checkering. It was very informative and it has piqued my desire to try some checkering. The video, however, is of questionable quality and, though the artist knows what he's doing, he is not a very good speaker. I found the parts of the dialogue that were easiest to understand were the part where the narrator spoke. The film would have been even better had the narrator did all the dialogue. Also, I've looked on the Internet and I couldn't the type of tool handles that were used in the video, so I don't know if they were made by the artist or if they are available commercially.
A good DVD that's worth it. Lots of tips and advise.
I found the DVD helpful, especially the part where he recommends taking your time to prevent mistakes. I suspect Joe has a lot more gray hair now as I FINALLY NOTICED the info in the DVD was made in 1984, this does not detract from the excellent info.
Excellent video. If you want to know the basic procedures and techniques, this video will get you started.
The master that this DVD was made from shows the effects of generational loss. Quality of lighting, close up videography, and poor clarify of image really limit the ability to benefit from the visual part of learning. Audio instruction is clear and pleasant to watch, with the instructor showing a great deal of experience in his craft.
Excellent video! Very good coverage, started with the basics and finished with the complex. Demonstrated all aspects, good accompanying narrative.
A pretty good video that goes hand in hand with Checkering and Carving of Gunstocks by Monty Kennedy. Neither stand on their own very well for a beginner, but put both together and you will get a very good introductory course on checkering.
The video content and instruction were excellent, the original quality of the video could have been better but for it's purpose overall it was excellent. I'm sure that the dvd didn't need academy award production to serve it's purpose, which it did very well.
Great content-Bad picture quality, but overall a good lesson!
Very good, answered questions may books did not.
The DVD on checkering was excellent. The instructor knew his subject and demonstrated how to checker. I enjoyed the DVD very much.
A great teaching video. Lots of really great tips from Joe. I was actually in the process of teaching myself this art and using a different tool set. I ordered the WE Brownell tool that he uses and really fell in love with it. Converting entire tool set over now.
The DVD arrived in just a few days and was better than I expected after reading some of the reviews about the quality. It was a good presentation and Joe B. explained what he was doing fairly well. I learned which tools to order and that was the main reason I rented this DVD. My only complaint was that a few times the camera angle was a little low, had it been a little higher the viewer could see what the checkering tools were actually doing.
I actually own this video in VHS as well. I've made a number of gunstocks using his teachings in this video. Sure, you'll learn how to finish and checker your gunstock in this video. But what I especially took away from this as very valuable are the many 'tricks of the trade" that he shares with you. From what product to use for your finish and why you might want to use that particular one, to certain tricks of the wet sanding process, and so forth. This is probably my favorite technical video. Its not DVD quality, but this info is without question "prime-time" stuff.
