Product availability: very long wait
I was anxious to watch this video as I had long admired the paintings of Mr Lipking. It was of some value as one could see him paint in time, but I expected a more detailed explanation of his methods. His friend and dvd producer Tony Pro did an admirable job of getting info (much of it mutual school history)in the commentary overdubs; So much is available via u-tube and and art periodicals about him that the Lipking fanatic might be disappointed awaiting new revelations about his approach to live painting. Still, I can't get enough of a good thing so I would give a qualified recommendation for this offering.
This was a pretty good DVD, better than I was expecting. Probably the best lesson here is to keep the drawing with your brush very precise, and to take things slow and easy. Don't hurry. Sometimes you'll wonder, "Why is he picking at that spot so much?" And as he does so, it just starts to come together to look amazing. But this is mostly just watching him paint. He barely says anything through the process, so if you're expecting to hear verbal lessons, this isn't for you.
My first impression of Jeremy Lipking was that he is very absorbed in his work. He doesn't speak much, he just shows and it's wonderful to watch the growth of his excellent technique. However, on the DVD, there is a track of him painting but with a Commentary. It's Jeremy and his friend the producer discussing Jeremy's life and technique during the quiet spots where he is painting the portrait of his wife. I found that watching the Commentary and then going to the in-the-studio track to try and paint along with him was very helpful. There is an introduction with a short discussion of materials used, as on most videos. This was a great job with their first video and I hope they come out with a Drawing video as they mentioned on the DVD. ~~~Therese X.
Jeremy Lipking is a wonderful painter and I very much enjoyed watching him work. Much can be learned about his brush technique and basic approach to painting through this video. He is not a particularly verbal teacher as opposed to say, Richard Schmid, who is amazingly adept at painting and talking at the same time. While it is explained that during this video Jeremy Lipking would concentrate on painting and leave the talking to later during the commentary with Tony Pro, I found that the commentary was not a lot better. Tony Pro labored to extract information from Jeremy, but not much was forthcoming that was of great value. I chalk this up to his relative youth, for while he is an amazing painter, he is still in his early thirties and I know we have much more to look forward to from him in the future.
I waited for about 5 months to get this DVD....an exceeding long wait. I wonder why more copies could not have been procured by Smartflix. But Jeremy Lipking is superb at what he paints - I especially enjoyed his full length figure painting at last October's USArtists show in Philadelphia - and I anticipated that the wait would be worth it. Mixed reviews - his painting is, of course, wonderful and the picture-in-picture of his wife/model is very good. It would have been helpful for him to say a little more about his mixing of colors as he was going along, although I think he is immersed in his creative process so I suppose explanation would be a speed bump and distract him. I would enjoy seeing a series of DVDs where he would go beyond the portrait sketch and do a start-to-finish oil portait. He does perform magic.
I like Lipking as a painter very much. Best to watch this video with the commentary "on" since Jeremy doesn,t talk as much as some other artists I have watched.
Well done. Instruction by doing. Good observers will learn a lot.
