Gunsmith 2: Correcting Bolt Lug Engagement and Excess Headspace

...with Steve Acker

General how-to video: Gunsmith 2: Correcting Bolt Lug Engagement and Excess Headspace by Steve Acker 3_bulb Review this video!

Steve demonstrates how a gunsmith can rework the Remington 700 bolt action rifle for more accuracy, using basic tooling and setups on the lathe and workbench. The work is done on a factory varmint rifle not as accurate as it should be, and which has long headspace. He improves bolt contact and the front receiver ring contact.

I viewed all three of Steve Acker's Gunsmith videos in a weekend and this review applies equally well to all three. My biggest complaint would have to be the camera work and editing. The lathe setups and procedures were mostly filmed from one vantage point and often not close enough to get a good look at what was happening.Often Steve himself was blocking the shot while performing the procedure. The editing was often disjointed in a cut and paste manner with several scenes re-used in all three videos, basically giving the feel that it had been edited by a monkey. Now having said that, I found the videos extremely informative with many good ideas on achieving an accurate setup and shop made fixtures for several different accurizing steps. Without a doubt Steve knows what he is doing and I believe he was successful in conveying that information in his videos.

Good coverage of problem identification and background info. A bit too overboard on machining though. It added an hour or more of machine work that personally I think was not needed. Some stuff could have been done by hand without all the setup time spent. A bit confusing on what he was actually trying to tell you until after he did it. Very good machinist but poor video instructor.....

This was very helpful. The presenter is a little stiff in the opening but portrayed a lot of information. I still would like to see more closeups but in general this was a very worthwhile video.
