Morgan Weistling's Painting For the Impatient

...with Morgan Weistling

Painting: Oil how-to video: Morgan Weistling's Painting For the Impatient by Morgan Weistling 4_bulb Review this video!

Join Morgan Weistling in three different demonstrations. The first is based on traditional techniques using charcoal and then layers on details and corrections. The second demonstration is where he starts with a feature of the face and then works his way outwards. This is his favorite way to create portraits. The third and final demonstration is a documentary about him and his workshop that he has been using for the last few years.

This video is really helpful and nicely done, and an added bonus is that Weistling is entertaining at the same time -- plenty of dry humor along with continual explanation of his painting process. Two different approaches to painting the head (or anything else) are demonstrated. Weistling talks about the pros and cons of each, although he definitely prefers the second, more direct method. A real plus on the DVD is the workshop critiques. Weistling goes from student to student critiquing each painting, and then working directly on each one. I learned as much from this (maybe more) than the first part of the video. This is a wonderful video from an exceptional artist and teacher.

Rent this as fast as you can. Mr. Weistling is an excellent teacher. Both his DVD's are jam-packed with information and very thorough. The image shown here is not by Weistling but by one of the students in the filmed workshop featured on this DVD. I should know as I was there as a student!

This man is an exceptional artist. I do not care for his slow brushwork although his end product is outstanding. The critiquing part III was well worth renting the DVDs. I would definitely rent it again and recommend it to beginner and experienced painter alike. I did not consider this comment when I rated the DVD, but I have to say SHIPPING WAS VERY SLOOOOOWWWWW. Ten days in the USPS is totally over the top. I have no solution, but I will notify Smartflix as to the number of days that it takes to receive the product from now on.

I felt he was kind of condescending and not very helpful. No explanation on colors he was mixing. Seemed to like the sound of his own voice and made a couple of rude comments to his in-studio audience. A wasted $25 in my consideration. I have heard he has done another real long set that is supposed to be real good, but am reluctant to rent it if it is no better than this followup one.

Morgan Weistling is a living master, see www.artrenewal.org/. His work is incredible, but his technique is to use small brushes and small dabs of paint using temperature more than color. He is much more concerned with value. This is why he paints one dab next to another while mixing anew each time, a little cooler or a little warmer color. I enjoyed the 2nd disk more than the first, but the technique is very advanced.

I have been studying art on my own for over twenty years and of all the classes, seminars, booksand portrait demos i have watched, the Morgan Weistling DVDs are, by far, the absolute best i have ever seen. I have over 300 books on art and drawing the head, and i must say that I have learned more from Morgan Weistling's DVDs than any other aspect of art I have encountered.you simply cant go wrong watching him work. I recommend these for any serious artist. I know they helped me more than i could put into words.

I rented the 2nd DVD in this set & I loved the critiques in this DVD. I learned a great deal from it! I watched it 5 times :O) Morgan Weistling is an awesome teacher, and an amazing artist!

A strange name for a video that was very long and tried my patience. But perhaps I'm not patient at all. It's obvious that Morgan Weistling takes care and has much knowledge to impart. But the tediousness of detail and technique was not what I expected from the title. On disc 2, he followed students in his workshop who knew they would be videotaped, and was very strict with them. He admitted that himself. Overall, a good video for learning all about taking care with oil painting (although we didn't see him mix the paints in the second video, which he explains) but I don't think the title suits the content.

I only rented DVD #2 - Did not find it very helpful.

Had previously rented complete set of 'Homework' which is by far one of the best DVD by this artist.

This was as good as being at a workshop ...maybe better as I could watch and listen as Morgan worked on all the student's paintings...it is a wonderful video and even better than the first one...

Disk one is great but disk 2 is horrible. On disk two the artist paints over his workshop students' paintings. The students paintings are at beginner level at best and the information given by Weistling about how to fix the paintings is a watered down version of what he provides painting his own work on the first disk. He also doesn't completely paint over the students work he tries to get them on the right track.
