MMS 1: The Fundamentals of the Miter Saw

The power miter saw is the essential tool for finish carpentry. What better place to begin the OnSite Educational Homebuilding Series, a state-of-the-art DVD project devoted to advancing the traditions of carpentry? Whether you are a beginner or an accomplished craftsperson, you need up-to-date information and advice on materials, tools, and techniques that will make your work more efficient, more profitable, and more enjoyable.

Gary Katz demonstrates his expert approach to:

  • developing a clear and comprehensive cutlist

  • using extension wings for accurate measurements and precise repetitive cuts

  • sizing casing for doors and windows, and shaving miters for a tight fit

  • working with an auxiliary fence to cut baseboard miters, butts, and self-returns

  • cutting crown in position, employing an angle finder to fine-tune your miters

Plus:

  • Safety Tutorial, detailing the latest equipment and techniques

  • Making a Miter-Saw Workstation, including measured drawings

  • History of Moldings: an overview of historic styles

(about 75 minutes)

MMS 2: Advanced Techniques

Mastering the Miter Saw, Advanced Techniques is the second in a two-part series covering finish carpentry's essential tool. Fundamentals--such as cutting molding "in-position"--are covered in Part 1. But because baseboard and crown molding styles continue to increase in size, mastering the miter saw means learning to cut "on-the-flat."

This program provides complete and easy-to-follow instruction on bevel cuts and compound cuts, using the full range of both bevel and miter positions. You'll also find plans for an acute angle jig, along with safe and reliable techniques for using it to cut angles sharper than a miter saw can normally handle.

Plus:

  • Determining spring angle

  • Working with a Bosch Angle Finder

  • A comprehensive crown chart, and how to use it

  • Making a cut list that will increase your confidence and efficiency

  • Understanding when to flip the material and when to flip the bevel

Including Special Features:

  • What's the best blade for your miter saw?

(about 75 minutes)

Not that great, pretty slow paced and the DVD menus were confusing. Still, the guy is a master at what he does and I learned some good tricks.

A very good tutorial on using this tool. I am a newbie with a 10" Hitachi, and just using it to square off boards. After watching this, I am more comfortable with using this saw and will take on more ambitious projects. I am renting part 2 -the second video - next. Recommended.

He starts off by saying that most carpenters cut crown molding by "visualizing" the cuts. And I saw that this is, in fact, the way I cut crown. Then he explains a better way using three simple principles. This explanation alone is worth the price of admission....

Pretty short video but still gives a couple of tricks that make it worth while. (might even save me a finger or two).

The info is good, however the DVD has a glitchy menu and I found it extremely difficult to navigate. I believe whomever manufactured the DVD blew that part. Let me add that I own part 1 of the series and the same thing can be said for that DVD.

This fellow is good, real good. Simple to understand and follow, this can save someone a lot of money to learn to do it right without learning on expensive wood. This is must if you are going to do work of your own.
