Review this video!
4 hours of art instruction - Jim first paints a 20" x 16" plein air painting and then returns to the studio to paint a 40" x 30" from the smaller plein air version. One camera shows him mixing his paints, another shows the canvas as he applies the paint, and the third shows Jim as he explains what he is doing and why he is doing it. Jim says, "Its like my plein air workshop, minus the personal abuse."

Highly recommend it for landscape painters.
Very instructive, very well presented.
Jim Wilcox is a lovely gentleman and I love the easel he designed, the Soltek. When he paints the water in a lake it looks so real I kept expecting his brush to disappear into it when he touched the lake area. But the rest of the video I found sleep-inducing.
Half of his painting is done in variations of a grayish lavender color (sky, distant mountains, mid-ground hills and rocks). He uses brush strokes in different directions to catch the light differently to make variations in color. I'm more interested in a colorist approach, so all that grayish lavender just doesn't interest me.
In the end his paintings are quite successful, but maybe not so interesting to watch being painted. On this video you see the same scene done twice, once in the field and once in the studio. After repeatedly dozing off watching the video I fast forwarded through the last half and sent it back.
Absolutely wonderful! It was the best art instruction video I have ever viewed! Jim Wilcox showed more of his detail painting and methods of applying paint than any art video I have seen.
This was a great video. Yes, I would recommend it to a friend and already have recommended it to one friend.
I can hardly wait until the other Jim Wilcox video gets here.
It couldn't be better. Went into great detail. I liked the fact they showed close ups of color mixing and application.
This was a very educational video. It took 2 viewings because of all the information offered, but I found myself saying "Ah ha, i get it". He provides consistent, intelligible material. Highly recommended.
Long, but excellent teaching video. I thoroughly enjoyed seeing the different techniques and approaches used by the artist in the field and in the studio. It is definitely worth the time it takes to view.
Next to Richard Schmid, Jim Wilcox is the best landscape oil instructor I've encountered. I highly recommend rental or purchase of both of his DVDs. Top-notch all the way!
Excellent DVD and great painter. This artist definitely will see me in his workshops. He's that good. I highly recommend it.
I loved this DVD! I'm going to buy the DVD now so I can watch it over & over. I learned a great deal from this & recommend it to anyone that is serious about their art.
Jim Wilcox does a great job of explaining the composition, color massing, editing, and development of a plein air painting. Jim has a wonderful and honest sense of humor and life which he shares abundantly as he paints along. He points out some the key elements to consider as the painting evolves.
He paints the sky first which works fro 40+ year artists, several others leave skies to last so that it is easier to value match sky to painting.
Jim then goes inside the studio gives oodles of great information for transforming the image 3 times larger. An excellent learning video!
