The third installment of the Professional Machine Shop Course builds on the knowledge you have acquired from the Lathe & Mill Courses. You will learn many new techniques (tricks that even some experienced machinists don't know), saving you years of frustration, trial and error. In this course, Darrell Holland will take you through all the support equipment that you need to have in your shop. He'll teach you what to look for when purchasing equipment and show you how to set-up and get the best performance out of each machine.
You will learn: How to set-up and use an engraving machine for lettering, tooling, barrels, etc. How to sharpen drills & end mills (this will save you lots of money!). Making a Bearing Scraper. Removing broken screws (these tricks will help you out of a jam). Also, Darrell goes through all the details of setting up your shop. He shares numerous time and money saving ideas, showing you the How and Why of setting up your shop for maximum efficiency. All the above would be equal to what you MIGHT learn in a semester of machine shop at the college level and are certainly worth investing in the course. But there's much, much more....

I only rented the first video of this series, and, while not in the same category of completeness as the other AGI Machinists' tapes (the lathe and milling machine courses), this one is quite watchable. Holland, the instructor, seems to me to somewhat slight the drill press, which to me is a rather more useful machine than here indicated. And I'm reasonably sure that watching him demonstrate his engraving machine was a waste of my own time, but still, the video is well worth one's money to rent and time to watch.
I enjoyed it but not as much as the Lathe and Mill DVDs. Good starter information and food for thought if you want to bring a shop up to speed. I thought he was being a little kind on the 3-in-1 units since this is supposed to be professional course. I own one of the better 3-in-1's and they are not up to speed for a pro shop and don't believe any of them are.
Half of the set is good and relevant to a machine shop, the other half is FLUFF just to make the number of CDs higher to impress. I found his courses on the mill and lathe more educational. This set is alright.
I rented the Professional Machine Shop Course: General Machine Shop based on the other series featuring Darrell Holland. The mill and lathe series are very good and I recommend them. There are a couple of things you need to know about this series. First, Darrell is only in 3 of the 5 DVD’s. Second, if you rent the entire set to save a few dollars, consider not renting disc 4. You will save more money, and disc 4 is just a guy at a trade show. There is no application to home or hobbyist users, and if you are a professional user, your salesman will be happy to take you around a trade show. The disc that Darrell is not in is the Brake Lathe and Cylinder Boring DVD. This was interesting, but at the level of the rest of the presentation.
Okay, but just okay.
If you know nothing about any of these tools you will learn a great deal. If you are moderately familiar with them I think you'll be disappointed at your $15 investment in renting this DVD.
I was hoping for tips and hints on how to get more from these tools as opposed to do this do that............
Overall I would say it was superficial.
