Review this video!
The D-Guard Bowie is a legendary battle weapon, part sword - part knife. The powerfully balanced design makes it a favorite tool for many tasks, but was kept ready for battle at all times. Harvey Dean has revealed his secrets and improvements for making a more secure and artful D-Guard Bowie in this 2 disc video, including an interview with the Mastersmith himself.

Harvey puts out a lot of information, and tops it off with his little tips and gadgets I would highly recommend this to any and all knifemakers, or anyone interested in "how did they do that".
Just so there are no surprises, this set is a more advanced video series about making the d-guard itself and fit and finish. There is no time spent on making the blade, nor much at all on the handle. But Mr. Dean fills this set with all kinds of information, tips and techniques that are useful not only on the bowie, but on most any blade. I cannot recommend this set enough! Excellent job again, Mr. Dean.
I have Harvey's flat grinding video, and thought this would be a good addition to my knifemaking videos.
It's a great video, but dont expect to see Harvey do any forging, blade grinding, handle work etc. It's strictly about the guard, and the handle assembly. I expected to see maybe a LITTLE about the other aspects of the making of a D guard bowie, but no.
The emphasis is on the actual "D" guard. Harvey says something in the middle of the video like "This isnt a grinding video" or "This is an advanced video. You should know how to make and fit a handle already" and "We're not gonna grind a blade. You can see that in my flat grinding video".
It's 3 hours of pretty much milling, fitting, bending, grinding, and finishing the guard. Lots of hand sanding scenes. Lots of long scenes of sanding and grinding, going through the progressive grits (could have been condensed IMO).
The only negative things I can say are that the camera is out of focus sometimes, and some of the action is blocked by Harvey's hand, arm, back, etc.
I'm going to say that this video is overall pretty good. Very informative.
I have been making and forging custom knives for a long while now and am here to say its easy to tell Mr. Dean is a ABS instructor, He is well skilled at teaching and articulating what needs to be shown with nothing skipped and often important steps covered several times. This video set is a must have to step up ones skills to higher end knives especially D guard Bowies.
This is a excellent video for the more advanced knifemaker. It shows how to make and fit a D-guard to a bowie to make a................D-Guard Bowie. I found the instruction to be very worthwhile and beneficial to me personally. It does not cover anything except doing the D-guard part so if you have trouble with anything else this is not the video for you. If you have made several to many knives then this is a excellent video.
Some good pointers were sprinkled throughout a badly edited, painfully long video set. The length of the video could have easily been halved, without loss of value, just by abbreviating the endless grinding sequences and by removing the closeups of Dean's forearm as it blocked the view of his workpiece. There's an old adage regarding engineering--that one should "design with and eraser." Center Cross videos should have taken this approach when they edited this snoozer.
