Engraving is a favorite way to embellish any personal item such as a knife, gun, or writing pen with a distinctive look and feel that adds a deeply personal flare. Watch as Ray Cover demonstrates his proven methods in an easy to follow manner. He will guide you through the steps necessary to complete some of the most beautiful art-work in the world today. Ray is an accomplished engraver and a trained art teacher who has taught from kindergarten to college level art classes. In this video Ray discusses design and layout techniques, explains edge geometry and sharpening alternatives, bordering and outlining basics, shading, stippling backgrounds, inlays, and more. Ray uses different models for illustration of the finer details of his work that would be hard to see on camera, such as large wooden chisels that show the angles and geometry much better than the actual gravers due to the miniature size of the tool itself. With clear, simple instructions, Ray will get you started into this wonderful art form.

Very informative, and nice work by Ray..... It covers quite a lot of what I needed to know as a new engraver, not just technical but also design choice. I would certainly recommend it to any newer engraver. Jack Davis
Ray Covers provided an in-depth lesson on the proper geometry required for sharpening quality gravers. He even covered sharpening techniques very well. I think more time could of been spent on the artwork used and the proper way to design the various patterns used, but over all, its well worth renting. I learned a lot!
The second DVD provided a quick overview of background work and gold inlay. I was left wanting more! Ray promises that an advanced version is in the works. I can't wait.
I enjoyed this video very much, but some of the close up shots of the engravings were out of focus and made viewing them disappointing.
This video was pretty instructive. I learned quite a bit, however the camera work, as is often the case with these type of videos, was terrible. The actual work being performed was often out of focus, which was extremely aggravating. After all, that's why I rented the video instead of buying a book.
I would have been very upset had I purchased this video instead of renting it. It really should have been re-shot.
My suggestion to potential viewers...don't bother.
Excellent video. Recommend highly. Video quality is great and instruction is superb. But, Ray is a skilled craftsman. What more would you expect.
