Two great videos on one DVD:
Making Flat Springs
You never know when you will have to be able to make a spring for that special project gun you got a deal on or just to keep your guns working in future. Learn the secrets and tricks to making flat springs in this one-hour course instructed by master gunsmith Bob Dunlap. Take ordinary spring stock and fix those firearms you just can't get parts for. This professional course is AGI's latest offering for the gunsmith and experienced hobbyist, but belongs in every gun enthusiast's collection. Bob takes you through the process of making a hammer spring from scratch. Includes metal selection, heat-treating methods, shaping springs, 'color tempering" and more. This will save you years of trial and error.
Making Coil Springs
Bob Dunlap goes back to the bench to give you hands on instruction on the design and manufacture of coil springs. Now you can make those springs for the odd jobs that always seem to crop up. Obsolete guns can be saved and used again. We'll show you how to figure out the size of the spring you need, how to wind it and how to temper it to get a long lasting professional part.

Product availability: very long wait
this was a good video with good information and I felt like I learned a lot from it. I would definately recommend it if you have a need for custom springs.
Very complete explantion of making several types of springs. A couple of times the camera's view was blocked by his hands while he was explaining something. Overall I feel it was very worthwhile and informative.
This video isn't what I would call "technical". It has some good how-to for heat treating, but the information about spring design is almost non-existant. More of a set of guidelines for replacing existing springs, or making them stiffer or softer. If you want to make a spring of a particular length with a particular rate (resistance to compression, or spring stiffness), then you'll just have to do it by trial an error. This video did not cover the formulas involved for selecting the correct size stock to make a spring of a particular size and rate.
Very good discussion and demonstration with tips and techniques of making springs. Definitely recommended!
Great information, A lot of this information I did not know, such as shaping a flat spring. It was well worth renting as far as I am concerned.
Hello, The DVD was very informative although I could have really used some measurements or dimensions of the jig Mr. Dunlap used to make the coil springs. I have been in touch with AGI, they say they don't use it much anymore and they just replace part for new part. I am very disappointed that there was no way to make a still shot copy of the jig. In my humble opinion that would have really made a big difference instead of having to guess the dimensions of all the different tools to use with the jig itself.
Other than that it was a great DVD to watch and learn from, I just hope I took good enough notes to duplicate the jig and accessories. If it had not been lacking in the above jig making and accessories and how to make it the with measurement information I thought it as great.
Thank You.
A great help. I have recommended SmartFlix to my friends.
Very informative. Like others, I would have liked to see some dimensions on the tool he used to wind the spring. Like he said though. Experiment and try some of your methods.
Very good quality video. Interesting. Knowledgeble and thorough presenter. Good camera work.
I was hoping to learn about spring making for model engineering purposes since custom springs appear to be so integral to gunsmithing. But this video falls very short. It is really lacking in anything technical you can’t find in much better detail from basic internet searches, books & magazines. You never get to ‘see’ the material being heated to a specific color prior to quenching on video, it happens out of camera range over a few seconds & that’s it for heat treating on teh entire video. I’ve read where magnets or heat sensitive crayons were used, but he just does it by eye. The springs themselves are 2 ‘free hand’ shapes made on a mini belt sander, one of them has a few coil winds from a very basic winding jig. I did not find the video useful.
Good, basic, interesting information. Worth renting, but not buying.
Very good dvd easy and fun to view and now i can understand and make my own springs, thank you
This one was fair..... hard to watch at first as I didn't have the type or round springs I was looking for.
