At last it is here and ready for you, the woodturners of the world! People have been asking Bill Grumbine to make a DVD that goes through the steps he teaches in his bowl turning classes. What makes this DVD so different from others? Well first of all, it has Bill Grumbine in it. But more importantly, this bowl turning DVD is as comprehensive as possible. It is also longer than just about any other DVD out there, even some two disc sets. There are over two hours of bowl turning information! So what does this thing cover exactly? Below is a list of the segments.
Introduction
Chainsawing - Choosing a log, the chainsaw and other equipment, safety when sawing, sawing techniques for different bowl blanks.
Bandsawing - Marking the slab cut during the chainsawing operation, sawing it out on the bandsaw, safety.
Rough turning - Mounting the blank on the lathe, cutting techniques, safety, preparing the blank for storage while drying.
Sharpening - Do I need to say more?
Form discussion - What makes a good bowl, and how do we determine shape.
Finish turning - Mounting the dry blank on the lathe, cutting techniques, a tiny bit of sanding. Who wants to watch a lot of sanding?
Finishing off the bottom - How to turn the bottom of the bowl so that people will say, "How'd you do that?!?" Discussion of three different techniques.
Oiling and Buffing - How to finish off your bowl for a beautiful shine.
So what are you waiting for?

This is the second DVD from Bill Grumbine. It shows more advanced techniques for bowl turning. Each project is shown from beginning to end starting with the log. The projects shown in this DVD include: a natural edge bowl, a square bowl and a winged bowl. Bill also shows how to core a blank to get three bowls

This video is the best I've seen for beginning bowl turners. Not only is the turner clear in his directions the camera work showing positioning of the tools is excellent. Great Video from start to finish.
Bill Grumbine did a great job making this dvd. He explained each step of the procedure in detail,so even a new turner as myself could understand, and the photography was very good.
This is an excellent, straight forward tutorial on how to go from a tree to a bowl. Dry humor abounds and it is clear that Bill is having fun. Highly recommended.
Absolutely one of the best turning videos I have seen. The video gives clear and up-close information from tree cutting to bowl prep and turning techniques. This a “must watch” for anyone who wishes to turn bowls.
I found this video to be very thorough in the steps for bowl turning from cutting the log to applying a finish. Excellent Video. I will buy myself the video sometime in the near future to have in my library to watch again.
He also injected humor which I enjoyed.
I'm a beginning turner and boy was this DVD fantastic. Bill is very clear on all of his instructions and even makes deliberate mistakes and tells you why they happened and how to avoid them. His humor is enough to keep you interested and completes a bowl from a log. Very educational and highly recommended.
This DVD is the best I have seen.
Excellent 'down home' presentation of blank preparation, roughing and finish turning. I liked this video well enough to go to Bill's website and by both this and his second video. My highest endorsement was that I bought this video after viewing the rental.
Grumbine has captured a process that gets us from tree to table. Good practices yield good products. He is a good teacher.
I was very happy with Bill's presentation. His dry humor and explanation of the different phases of turning a bowl was very good. It was at the level I needed being a new person to wood turning. Would recommend to all beginners. David
This DVD was the best one yet. I really learned a lot and I feel that it is a real worthwhile DVD to watch about turning. Great!
Bill combines an entertaining sense of humor with effective instructions on bowl turning for the beginner in this video. i have viewed several videos on this subject and bill's is first rate.
Pretty basic and would recommend for a novice turner. A seasoned turner might find it boring. It is well done and Bill is a great presenter. Some good tips which may not agree with everything you've learned, showing that there's more than one way to do things. I was particularly interested in the usage of the bowl gouge.
We're beginners and this dvd helped us a lot. It was informative and enjoyable.
Very good and informative video. The dry humour makes you feel at home, and his presentation keeps you interested.
Bill does an excellent job of walking through the process and his own humor tossed in throughout. After meeting Bill in person at a recent show and watching him turn a monster bowl, the video was the logical next step ... and I'm glad to say it was worth every minute of watching the video ... maybe now I can turn that bowl I've been waiting on!
I found the video very interesting and informative.
I will probably rent it one more time in the future when I get a lathe so I can run the video and work on a project at the same time.
I purchased both DVDs in this set and I just have to say that Bill is both a master wood turner and a master teacher. His teaching style is both entertaining and engaging while being extremely informative. His explanations are well thought out and clear. He does a great job of explaining and then demonstrating what he was talking about. He presented techniques that were easy to learn and once I did made a huge difference in my turning.
I have purchased a great many Turning DVDs and I have found these to be some of the very best I own! Highly recommended for turners of any skill level.
I am happy to make a review of "Making Bowls with Bill Grumbine.
This was a very well done, clear presentation of bowl making. I must say it was one of the best DVD's I've had to privilege of viewing. Thank you for the opportunity to see it. I'm sending Bill a letter to tell him how much I enjoyed it.
"Beyond Basic Bowls" was as good or better than the first one. It was a great companion to the other . I did enjoy it very much. I learned a great deal about the techniques Bill uses & have proven them in my own shop. Anyone who wants to learn to make bowls will benefit greatly to view this DVD. Thank you very much.
Bill Grumbine's DVD, Turned Bowls Made Easy, is excellent. I have one quarrel with it, he doesn't clearly define the shaping of his chosen gouge - although he does show the sharpening process. I also have David Ellsworth's video that is specific to his signature gouge - and the gouge Grumbine uses bears a great similarity to it (not suggesting any plagiarism, both like a long side grind with a shallow bevel on the tip). I suggest that one watch both Grumbine's video and Ellsworth's - and adjust between the small differences of style to fit your own preference. I intend to regrind one of my old bowl gouges to an approximation of the Grumbine shape with a honed inside edge for better cutting, and retain my Ellsworth signature gouge which I sharpen with the recommended burr remaining. Each shows the same cuts, each uses a similar gouge. Ellsworth emphasizes the "shear scrape" cut which wants the burr, Grumbine uses that cut but emphasizes the shearing of the sharper edge. Just before writing this I roughed out the inside of a green oak bowl - and bounced back and forth between my traditional bowl gouges and the Ellsworth, finding each to be better depending on where I was in the process.
You may choose one or the other styles, but you should try both. They are only different in detail.
Best, Jon
A great video. I learned a lot. Well worth watching.
The DVD was excellent, thank you very much!
