Learn about fascinating ancient battles from the esteemed Professor Fagan. You’ll learn how and why certain large-scale battles were powerful enough to destroy entire, long-standing empires. Some of the many battles studied in this course are Marathon, the 490 B.C.E. battle between Athenians and Persians, with a monumental Greek victory; Guagamela, a hammer-and-anvil battle in which Alexander the Great prevailed over the Persians and put an end to a 300-year reign of the Achaemenid Persia; and Masada, occurring in A.D. 73, when the Romans were able to defeat the Jewish Fortress, who committed suicide instead of surrendering to this powerful and legendary force.
Professor Fagan lectures that "battles, for all their madness, are worthy of study if for no other reason than that they are the crucibles of history." Learn about these incredible battles from an experienced and interesting Professor to gain insight as to why Europe and Asia are arguably still influenced by the outcome of some of these heroic bloodsheds.
