Algebra I

...with Monica Neagoy

Math how-to video: Algebra I by Monica Neagoy 5_bulb Review this video!

Dr. Monica Neagoy bases her teaching method on research on the best way to convey knowledge of alebgra, and thus starts off with functions as the first chapter in Algebra I.

Next comes a review of the history of algebra, then an overview of the types of functions, in a logical order. Linear equations lead to quadratic equations, and so on up to exponential functions.

Each set of functions is a basis for the next.

The second to last chapter teaches systems of equations. The last chapter section gives a brief introduction to fractals and chaos theory.

Some of the many topics covered include:
* Word problems, and translating them into algebra problems
* The language of numbers and equations
* Conversions from numbers and equations to graphs, and back again

Dr. Neagoy also uses a several physical tools such as string, tiles, and geometric shapes to bring problems alive. These tools make the topic even more clear, and the topic more exciting.

The multiple approaches, the emphasis on converting back and forth from word problems to equations to graphs, and the progressions of concepts makes this course far more interesting than a typical overview that centers just on dry symbols.

This series is appropriate for multiple audiences.

I have not finished the series yet, however if the following DVDs are as good as this one the rating will be a 5! Monica makes it easy to learn/refresh Algebra. I am looking forward to watching the rest of the series.
