While he is using a benchtop knee mill, every subject Rudy covers will translate directly to any other. Excellent introductory video!
This is an excellent introductory video. Rudy covers all the basic information needed to setup and begin milling. He covers areas that are important and typically seem to get left out of most fundamental documentation.
This is a great introduction to the Milling Machine. I was impressed that the example machine used was a small no frills home shop machine that I could relate to. Rudy is extremely thorough in his presentation and covers all the basics. I would recommend this vidio to any novice machinist.
Excellent, very detailed leaves nothing out. Will rent more of his viedeos. We will miss his expertise
I have some milling background and still learned a few things from this DVD. He shows a vise that was machined on a bench top mill and it was quite impressive. I am building one right now from his design. If you're a beginner with the mill, get this one to get you started.
Very Informative! The video delivers exactly what is promised. Video and audio quality were very good. After viewing this video, I was able to operate my newly acquired knee mill and start making simple parts immediately. I look forward to trying some of the more advanced courses.
The information is useful. The "project" used as a teaching tool is OK as X, Y and Z are utilized and reinforced. A bit dated but still appropriate to the hobbyist.
Not only is the machine truing and setup excellent, but the tips and tricks that will help you maximize your efficiency make this another gem.
Interesting and informative, well worth watching. I viewed it twice the same night. It includes plans for a fun useful project for the beginner. The instructor is a little 'dry', he reminds me of my high school machine shop teacher, I will be renting the advanced DVD next in the series.
If you're starting from scratch, as I am, you'll get your money's worth with this lesson, plus you'll enjoy it. It has major flaws though. Any how-to video needs close-up camera technology. While milling, one needs to see the surface being milled. You can't. In some cases the narrator asks you to notice certain things that aren't even in the frame!
I'm a newbie and learned a lot from Rudy. Very good video.
For a novice like me this video is great. The quality of the video is not the best resolution but ok. It is valuable to get years of experience from these veterans in just hours!
Filmed by a real amateur and edited by a high school student. It's fun to watch Rudy fumble around.
All due respect to Rudy, but this video is one of the worst edited training films I have ever seen. Thank god for 4x fast forwarding.
A good video on the fundamentals. I knew a lot of it but wanted to make sure I did not miss any important information. I was pleased enough to order two more videos on machining.
I had previously bought some books on machine operations and was very disappointed with the contents.
As a newbie to machining I really liked the nuts and bolts format of the video. The narrator was very knowledgeable and it was obvious he had the techniques down. Now, I would like to find one of the benchtop machines that he used.
Very good beginning point. Covers all the fundamentals very thoroughly.
This DVD was just what I needed. I had a good working knowledge of the subject but there are a lot of little helps along the way that I will be using every day. A very good instructor. Only draw back was they did not spend enough time or provide enough information regarding the special vice the instructor had built, I am going to try to duplicate it but it would have been helpful to have more info Larry Nicholson Okeechobee, FL
Great learning tools, nicely done. I have liked all your DVDs so far,and you just can`t beat your service!:)
An excellent video which demonstrates the fundamentals of the use of a Mill, just what I needed as I had never used a Mill before. The service was excellent and I look forward to ordering more videos.
This is a good introduction to Mill setup and operation; video quality could be better at some points.
I have zero experience with a mill, much less how to run one. The video was very straightforward, showing exactly how to set up a mill for various cuts. The project included with the DVD was how to make a flycutter, using the machine. All the various steps necessary were shown. This was quite helpful to demonstrate how the mill works, rather than simply showing the different parts of the machine. For a beginner like me, I would highly recommend viewing this video for an introduction to mill operation.
Very basic but that what it claims to be.
The content was good and very basic and i got what i needed from it. Filming was a little outdated.
The basic information on this video is good, but the pace is r_e_a_l_l_y s_l_o_w. The editing is minimal. The camera rarely moves, sometimes the subject is not even in the frame, and (at least on my copy) there are re-takes that were never edited out of the tape! Rudy seems to know about milling machines, but he needs someone else to direct his videos.
I have been a hobbyist lathe operator for some time, and am considering purchasing a milling machine. This video was a perfect orientation to the subject and the project example very useful.
This is a very, very basic instructional video. If you are already familiar with the fundamentals of shop practices, you won't see much that's new. The production values are poor. They don't even put a lapel mike on the instructor, so there is a lot of motor noise for him to talk over. Listening to the shop vac blasting away is a real treat. After he gets through warning you about how sharp the chips are, he repeatedly brushes them away with his bare fingers, instead of a chip brush. That said, I did pick up a few tips. There's just too much time wasted getting tools he's mis-placed, talking about general shop practices instead of mill-specific topics, and trying to remember his lines. There must be a better video for starting out with the mill.
Very good site will recomend highly. To a friend and family to this site.
This is a great video for someone who knows nothing about milling machines and is interested in an orientation. Rather than cover all the operations that are possible with a milling machine, the video covers the operations necessary to make a simple tool. Fortunately, this involves multiple steps that are commonly performed on a milling machine. Along the way, you'll pick up many, many tips and techniques that are invaluable. So, if you are a newbie, then this video will help orient yourself to a vertical milling machine.
All that being said, this is obviously an amatuerish production. There is a problem with the lights early on in the video and the instructor has to chase off what is apparently the family dog once or twice.
Focus and framing are big issues. The person behind the camera often is not framing the shot properly and when the shot is framed, the focus is often bad. This video would have been greatly enhanced with the use of high quaility digital stills in place of poorly focused video.
The instructor was a master machinest and noted for his skills. If you are new to using a milling machine, then by all means take a look at this video.
I was very pleased with the service on the first video though some of the papers for the milling projects were missing.
For a beginner I got a lot out of video, It will help we a lot. I was bothered by him reaching across the machine to turn it on though, if he had any loose clothing, well you know what could happen. Thanks again Ted Linde.
This video was outdated. I watched it in a DVD player connected to my TV. I can not view the TV in the shop area where I work on my milling machine
A good intro video for the home shop machinist. Somewhat slow moving, but if this is your first time out, that's what you need.
Have already told all my friends about Smartflix and how impressed I've been in the short time I've delt with them.
This is an excellent introductory video. Rudy covers all the basics. I am a newbie and I got what I needed and worth every cent. Thanks Rudy and Smartflix Ken
I'm a novice at metal work and this DVD was just what I needed to get me started
Thanks Smartflix!
Very good DVD and I would highly recommend to all.
Slow moving and rather crude production, but lots of good information, clearly given.
Excellent introduction to the vertical mill. I just bought my first mill and found the video extremely helpful for a beginner.
I am just getting started in machining with a mini mill and found this to be a good overview and worth the watching. I especially enjoyed the project of making a fly cutter from scratch and seeing how each operation was approached and the materials and tool set up to make the finished part.
I just received an old (20 years) milling machine and of course want to learn how to use it. This video sucks! Not only is it older than dirt, but he had it set up in his single wide trailer. Probably the second bedroom. The mill was a mini and the production was terrible. There was nothing I learned from this DVD that I have not already seen free on the net. Waste of time.
I already watched the lathe dvd and learned a lot from it. I highly recommend it.
