This was an excellent video. Perfect for anyone that has never used a lathe before. Even experienced users will learn something. I know I did. After watching this video, I have rented all of Rudy's other titles.
An excellent introductory video. Rudy throughly covers most common lathe uses.
this is a very good first introduction to the workings of a lathe for someone who has very litttle or no experienece. Camera work was good and the explanation was good. I liked that it came with written set of drawings for the project he builds.
I liked the video. I've had a lathe for 35 years, but most of what I know came from watching others 35 years ago, or trying things. The video showed me things I didn't know.
Excellent presentation of basic lathe operation. This is probably best for beginners like me but is unlikely to be of much use to experienced lathe operators.
Good overview of basic lathe operations. Worth renting and watching...but I'd be real upset if I paid "list" and bought this DVD. Only real downside is that Rudy does NOT cover carbide tooling or carbide tooling inserts..both of these of very popular with HSMs who don't know how or want to bother with grinding HSS bits.
As a complete novice I found this presentation outstanding. I was fascinated and sat glued to the chair for several runthroughs. I watched this dvd at least once a day and always picked up something I missed in previous viewings.
Helpful for someone with no or limited knowledge of how to operate a lathe.
I think it was very instructive. I am a beginner at this and numerous things were explained in a way that made me realize what I was doing wrong.
This was really good. The instructor went nice and slow, explaining everything clearly along the way. Before watching, I would recommend that a viewer get a very basic introduction to an actual lathe and to the technical terms first.
This is a good instructional DVD for those just starting or thinking of starting lathe operation. The presentation shows all the basic lathe operations and how the lathe works. It is a good starting point to decide if metalworking is for you. Rudy makes every thing look so easy, but at the same time he also warns of potential trouble spots. This is a great way to be introduced to the lathe and all of its potential uses
A great DVD for the beginner or novice. As a first introduction to the workings of the machine lathe for the Hobbyist a definite asset. Rudy covers the most common lathe uses and makes every thing look so easy, just as you would expect from a skilled machinist. Filming is a little shaky but not a big detractor. Information and technique outweigh any short comings yes worth renting
Fabulous! A fundamental video that teaches the basics in a clear and concise manner.
All due respect to Rudy, but this video is one of the worst edited training films I have ever seen. Thank god for 4x fast forwarding.
Good for a true beginner, but makes no mention of quick change tool posts, which seem to be the standard now.
Worthwhile. A bit slow at times. The biggest problem is video production. It would help to change the camera angle more often. Sometimes the resolution was not adequate to really see what was going on. However, everything he does, he does well. I should ever know so much about machining.
Even though it's a pretty old production and gives the viewer the impression that it was produced in someone's garage with a home video camera, the content of the DVD is easy enough to understand and if you're looking for a place to start with learning to use the machine lathe this video is certainly worth the rental price.
Almost too good to be true, I'll have to rent at least 20 more videos just to be sure!
Video on the Fundamentals didn't spend much time teaching them. Could have been more useful by addressing more on machine setup.
Rudy always does a excellent job. I'd recommend this video to any first time lathe operator.
Thanks
It was very informative. Gained a lot of knowledge.
Great. Provides a lot of good information.
What can you say, Rudy is just fantastic at describing lathe operation. I can't wait to get the next DVD. I can just imagine what I could learn if he was right by my side.
Terrible production. Information is OK. I wanted to see some more projects and less talk. Some repetitive clips (Duplicates)
This video is very helpful to the person who knows a little and wants to progress. I would have appreciated more detail on tool grinding. Excellent production values. I wish I had had the time to watch it several more times. One week is not enough.
Very good basics video. I have never run a lathe before. I suspect if you have any experience in metalworking/latheing, this video wouldn't be so helpful. Ive definitely learned a lot, although I think I started to nod off when he was machining the large chunk of steel. I'm probably going to get the follow up video (threading)
Rudy gave a good overview of the lathe. Although his lathe is very different than my 3-in-1 machine, I was able to pick up on rotational speeds that are more appropriate than I have been using and it was great to see how he supports his work with a roller bearing steady rest. Overall, it was worth the money. The process was simple and straight forward and I will be ordering more products in the future.
Very good, solid info on setting up and operating a metal lathe. Recommend for those new to the lathe
it was ok i thought it would be a bit more specific about lathe operations but it was good for a beginner it could have taught a bit more than it did. it was not worth the money for me. but somebody that has never seen a lathe it would be ok for them. it could have shone how to get the center of the round stock in order to drill a hole. it shows you the very basic and nothing more.
A fairly well-presented introduction to the lathe which assumes the viewer is very green, and starts from the beginning of lathe operation. The viewer is given a tour of a small lathe, and its controls, but no mention is made of levelling the machine, proper maintenance, or measuring accuracy of the lathe. Also, no demonstration of centering in the 4-jaw chuck is presented. There is very little mention of safety concerns, and no mention of modern quick-change tool holders or carbide tooling.
The very simple beginner project (a boring bar holder) is demonstrated in ample detail, and is suited for most smaller lathes. The boring bar holder should present no real challenges to beginners, and would probably prove to be a very useful addition to most tooling collections. The printed drawings that came with the DVD rental were very difficult to read (mostly due to the dark blue paper), and really are not necessary, given that the dimensions and complexity of the project offer no real difficulty in imagining the necessary operations or material selections.
If you're just starting out in lathe operation, you might want to save this video for your second or third rental, opting for something that covers things like centering in the 4-jaw and grinding tool bits, first. Without that basic knowledge, you're not ready to make a boring bar holder.
All in all, a very good presentation of the project, and a good (but not great) introduction to lathe operation.
Good product. I learned a lot.
It took a month to have the DVD sent to me.
This is a pretty good introductory DVD. I look forward to viewing the more advanced and in-depth courses.
It was OK, and I learned a lot, but I would have liked to have seen some tool grinding. but I am going to follow it up with the advanced turning one.
