Although Mike Mahoney is most recognized for his production kitchenware, he is also considered by many to be one of the finest hollow form turners today with his work in many of the world's finest collections. In this video Mike Mahoney takes you step by step to create beautiful, well crafted hollow forms and lidded urns. While taking you through the basic process of turning a hollow form, Mike turns the form with a section of the piece removed, allowing you to see inside the hollow form at all times while the cutter does the work. Not only does Mike teach you everything necessary to turn hollow forms, he also covers critical design element fundamentals for creating hollow forms that are functional and beautiful. Mike concludes this exceptional video with a demonstration on how to create a threaded lid that adds the perfect finishing touch to an urn.

A terrific video-kudos to Mike! Mike has a great teaching style--very approachable. The sample projects he chooses to share are helpful, illustrate a decent range of hollow forms, and are all well explained. The first project is a form from which he cuts out the side so you get a great view of tool presentation and cutting in action. The only caution I'd offer is one project (burial urn) includes a threaded lid. While the threading step is demonstrated as well as all the other techniques, it is a topic that has solicited its own instructional videos. Which is to say, if you pursue the urn project you'll probably want to look up at least one of those thread chasing videos for additional instruction. Easily one of the best turning videos I've seen.
I like Mike and his knowledge of turning is unsurpassed BUT I didn't like this video. I felt as if some parts were elementary and then maybe we skipped to college?
great dvd I highly recomend it if you want to learn hollow forms
Mike Mahoney is a great teacher. He explains everything very well and this is a DVD that all turners should view.
