Join Bill as he paints a figure en plein air. From start to finish he demonstrates the art in the effects of outdoor light, his unique pastel style, pastel color choices, the importance of drawing, and more. Then go back to the studio with Bill for a second DVD full of Special Bonus Materials. To be a witness to Bill painting is to understand why he was placed here on earth. It is when he is painting that he finds his greatest joy. In the meticulous and honest evaluation of all that surrounds him Bill is humbled by his attempt to grasp the truth of what he sees. With pure pigments of pastel in hand, Bill transforms paper into a breath, a moment in time when all is right with the world and time is transcendent.

Bill Hosner is definitely a sketcher.. you can see that immediately as he puts his pastel to the paper. So he has provided a DVD that is quite different because he does come from the sketching background. It's a very good session at the beach with a live model. He is methodical and very logical in all he teaches and says. He uses great precision and does a magnificent job on the painting. Sometimes though it appears to me that he is drawing and coloring in the shapes....but when the painting is finished the overall appearance is just beautiful. He achieves what he sets out to do. I enjoyed it very much and the end product is a terrific painting with interest and movement. Loved his subject matter of women in long flowing skirts, scarves, hats, etc.
Disc #2 is quite short and shows his gallery of about 5 paintings and offers some other tips and information about his set up of pastels, what brands he uses, values, lighting and other good tips.
Bill uses pastels, not paint. He does a good job but this video may be in the wrong section. The materials aside, he explains the composition and I thought it was worth renting.
Good video! I agree this DVD should be under Pastels. It may be overlooked by pastelists here in the Oil section.

Overall, pretty good DVD with confident brushwork. This DVD more be a little more helpful if there were a 2 camera shoot with the other view closer to the painter with a better perspective of the model which the artist sees and paints. This is a very small issue; the DVD is worth renting.
This is a good dvd and I would recommend it to anyone.
