This is an excellent production. There are 330 minutes of instruction and another 330 minutes of specific scene selections for review. Great instruction on execution of different fabrics, hands, feet, male and female facial characteristics, etc. A great demonstration of carrying your colors throughout the painting, as well as temperature control and atmospheric perspective. Because she is so detailed and exact in her instructions, I was able to use my own reference subject material relating to the same palette and follow along for a successful outcome and I haven't painted anything in 20 years.
I enjoy all of this artist's videos. She is probably the best teacher out there, and her videos are the highest quality. If you want to learn to paint like the old masters, she's a great one to learn from.
Johnnie Liliedahl is an execption DVD teacher. Her preparation in making her DVDs is exceptional. The lessons are thorough and really well paced. "The Courtship" is no different in this regard. It is a lesson on painting like the Old Masters, and takes a lot of time and patience, especially for beginner painters. But in the end it is worth all the slogging, as you discover you are capable of painting a fairly decent Old Master painting.....and since you worked so hard doing it, you won't forget the lessons.

I have bought many of Liliedahl's DVDs and VHSs but never attempted to paint any until I rented Boreas which had a cartoon in it. I painted it and it is beautiful. I rented The Courtship and have went through Disc 1 one time but will go through it again to make sure I didn't miss anything. She really tells you a lot of pointers to look for when painting. In this one there is no cartoon or a picture in one piece. As I looked through it,the sheets of instruction, I read where you can only paint one painting and be registered. I don't intend on selling as I'm only interested in learning the techniques. She says this is a award winning painting and that might be why. I feel even if you don't paint it you will learn a lot from the video. I agree that she teaches in a language you can understand.
