Scott Burdick is known for his bold brushwork and lush color in his figurative paintings. What underlies those powerful paintings is a mastery of figurative drawing and anatomy. In this new four-hour program, Scott demonstrates how to use various drawing media to create masterful drawings in red conte, traditional charcoal and wet-brush charcoal powder. Burdick is a master of many media, which this program will introduce to you. Working with the live model, he takes you through a drawing session that begins with five-minute gestures and ends with 20-minute long poses, over a period of three hours. The last demonstration is a portrait executed totally in a charcoal wash; that is, powdered charcoal applied with brush and water. Always an articulate instructor, Burdick will demonstrate how to begin a drawing session, relax into longer poses and gather the most information for the model. The program has been edited to present to the viewer the most information you would wish to see, including the posed model and close-up views of the drawings as they are created. Additional material includes how to square up a photo to enlarge the composition to drawing or painting size, and sight-size measurements.

This is a good, solid series of demonstrations of figure drawing by a real master. Don't be fooled by the photo that accompanies this video. In it, he's working from a photo, but this was a brief segment, to make a specific point. The bulk of the video is done from a live model (be aware that the model is nude, and on camera, if you have a problem with that).
Burdick completes several drawings of lengthening duration. He starts with one-minute gesture drawings and works his way up to 20-minute poses. The disc menu allows you to skip ahead or back to the poses you want to review.
He gives some good instruction, but to me the most value is in just watching him work. This is true of most art videos. Books can't teach you nearly as well as actually watching a pro as he works. This is quality stuff.
This is an excellent DVD. I watched it several times, and used it to do my own figure drawings. It was very helpful to see Scott's technique and then try it myself. The beauty part was being able to play it over and over and try the drawings again and again -- a much better bargain than a live model class. I saw my drawings improve in just a week!
This is a fabulous "workshop". Scott Burdick is a master instructor. I would certainly recommend it to anyone truly interested in painting. To advance in painting we must learn to 'see' and to be able to do that, takes so much practice and miles of canvas. Too many beginning artists want 'right now' what takes years to accomplish....
Scott's strength is his loose but deft handling of medium. For anyone who has a problem with being "too tight"{as I do} watching Scott is very liberating. For that reason I would recommend it. Scott's art is based on a few effective concerns. It's not deep in content or rich in concept but his "tools" are applicable to many styles and approaches.
This was a very good Dvd for charcoal or conte drawing of nudes. I enjoyed the quick poses and the warm ups. Took me back to the class that was almost identical to this dvd. Good for beginners and reminders to us all how important drawing, sketching is for a final work.
I got it mainly to gain insight into the water/charcoal paint/sketches Burdick does. The early parts of the dvd are basic but will help the beginner. A talented artist and a nice down to earth nature...Highly recommended.
Great DVD. He is very good. He shows several diferent techniques. I recommend. The charcoal was a technique that I did not know and I am glad I rented this.
I found the measurements section of this DVD to be of poor quality. The rest was adequate to good.
Nice to see different approaches to timed gesture drawings. Good use of split screen which is sadly lacking in too many other videos.
