Joseph is a highly regarded Australian watercolour artist who has the ability to create a magical atmosphere and mood in his paintings. In this film we follow him as he paints in Australia and Venice. He paints a busy Melbourne street full of movement and life as well as the marina at Williamstown with its boats and the city of Melbourne in the background. In Venice he paints a view of the fish market on the Grand Canal. Boats, cars, buildings and figures are all portrayed in an impressionistic manner.

This DVD is just as well produced as Zbucvik's other one (Watercolor on Location), though I gather it was his first one. It may be more for intermediate painters than beginners. It should be of particular interest to plein air painters: It's instructive to see a pro get into trouble and how he resolves it. In a Venice canal location a garbage boat parks in front of the scene being painted while the tide come in and floods the area...and he manages to work around it all to a satisfying conclusion. On a Melbourne street scene he initially misjudges his first washes but corrects things skillfully enough to use the picture on the face of the DVD. This guy is just a good plain painter - no gimmicky techniques, formulas or recipes. He's all about seeing and translating that into watercolor. You need a bit of experience with the medium and sound drawing skills to work like he does but he gets a real sense of natural light and atmosphere. I'll probably buy this one too.
This a good dvd. The artist is one of my favourite watercolorists. I have his book. His style is traditional English rather than avant-garde/experimental. Australia seems to have a number of top traditional watercolorists. He starts out a little stiff but soon warms up. It is amazing to see what can be done with watercolor, properly used. No mixed-media, wax, salt, alcohol, saran-wrap,etc. here. Just great skill and experience.
I very much enjoyed this DVD! I liked that he did three paintings, and described exactly his philosophy and method every step of the way. I viewed it several times, and would highly recommend it.
