Fluid Forming Compound Shapes in Aluminum

...with Kent White

Sheetmetal how-to video: Fluid Forming Compound Shapes in Aluminum by Kent White 4_bulb Review this video!

Use water pressure and a cavity to form sheetmetal parts, with either city water pressure or an inexpensive high-pressure pump. See detailed coverage of the pressures required for various sized parts, the inexpensive pumps available, and some engineering designs for the cavities.

In the video, they make aluminum shapes that are smooth and free of marks, although other types of sheetmetal can certainly be "inflated" into some interesting shapes.

This is a first class educational video. This isn't something that the average back yard beater would do. Because of the size and weight of the plates needed for fullsize parts. But the quaility of the DVD is good it was thought out and followed a logic to the process. They do start out with a small scale part and follow thru each step of the process. If you listen closely in the begining they talk about using a form with plates and an air operated grease gun. They do admit this video is more of a get you thinking, it is truly amazing what you can do with power washer. Sort of like your mother "shouting don't do that you will put your eye out"!. This is a tinmantech video, I had heard of them but never seen one. I give it a resounding yes, even if you never plan on doing the process. I think I may have to try it on a small scale for jewelry. If I never use anything form the video other than the annealing large sheet aluminum. IT is worth the cost of the rental. they cover and even show what happens if not done correctly.

The concepts were interesting, yet not practical for any home shop machinest. My biggest complaint is that much of the filming was done in real time. I don't need to see them screw on and torque every single bolt. The same information could have been conveyed in a 15 minute short. If you want to see every single aspect, including all the failures like water leaks in hoses, then this video is for you. And you might want to get a pet turtle or a pet rock if the turtle is too fast. If you just want the information then you are better off reading a page on the Internet.

This was a good video for general information on the subjectof fluid forming. It gave several examples, large and small of the kids of pieces that can be created using this technique. A little too much chatting.. and not enough hard numbers but good over all.

It was very cool to see that you can do this at the home shop scale, with just a pressure washer...It opens up all sorts of doors I would not have thought were within my grasp or budget.

Very neat video of what is possible with common pressure washer and wood forms.

The production leaves much to be desired. Although I did a lot of fast forwarding, this DVD was exactly what I expected, it was informative and another form of knowledge.
