Machine Shop Secrets

...with Marshall Burr

Other Machines how-to video: Machine Shop Secrets by Marshall Burr 3_bulb Review this video!

Machine Shop Secrets is a program designed to create an awareness of mechanical devices, machining, and manufacturing. After a great deal of research, analysis, and refinement, we have concluded that the type of individual who possesses a technical interest and mechanical aptitude is much more successful as a visual learner, rather than by the more common texbook approach, and the classroom environment has proven to be much too generic to be able to meet the needs of each individual.

As a result we have now completed a two-and-a-half-hour, interactive DVD. This program is designed to educate the viewer in the fundamental structure of the machining process and to create an awareness of the vital elements involved in every manufacturing environment. These include: visualization, measurement, tools for measurement, cutting tools, tool geometry, and speeds & feeds, to name a few. In addition, discussion centers around key machine types: the lathe, the milling machine, the surface grinder, and the band saw.

Although we are primarily using manually operated machines for our discussions, the principles and techniques described are directly related to and utilized in CNC (computer numeric controlled) equipment as well. In fact, in many cases, the skills covered in this program were never taught in the early stages of training. Individuals who can benefit from this program include: programmers, set-up personnel, operators, designers, shop managers, engineering students, and anyone else involved in any capacity in a manufacturing environment. And let's not forget the hobbyist, tinkerer, inventor and the patent attorney as well.

Extra effort has been invested and the entire program has been broken down into 46 chapters. Each topic is readily located and viewable without the usual "searching" that is commonplace in most video programs, as well as DVD's. And if you didn't get it the first time, you have the option of viewing an individual segment over and over, until it finally clicks.

This video was added to our catalog on April 05, 2007 in Metalworking::Other Machines, Metalworking::Lathe, Metalworking::Lathe, and Metalworking::Lathe.

The title is a bit deceptive. "Secrets" made me think this might show some information like trade secrets, tricks, or other insightful tips. It's a well-presented overview of the machine shop, including descriptions of measurement, lathe, mill, grinder and bandsaw along with their general operation.

While it's better written and prepared than many instructional videos, I'd hoped for something beyond the basics.

Very good for a person just getting into the use of shop machines.

In talking about copyright issues at the beginning of the video, the person had a very accusatory manner, as if I would ever do such a thing, and talked about someone copying a video being the same as Osama Bin Laden. This arrogant attitude turned me off so much, I did not want to watch the rest of the video. I don't learn well from anyone who makes such generalizations and I certainly don't tend to trust what they say. I'm returning this video unwatched, unfortunately.

The title is deceptive. This video is nothing like the book of the same name. Very few shop secrets are revealed like in his book. It covers basic fundamental machine operations with the lathe, mill, grinder and metal band saw. The name should have been "Basic Machine Operations for the Beginner.

In the introduction, he threatens to track you down like Osama Bin Laden if you copy the dvd! Totally uncalled for in my opinion.

Buy his book, its great. The dvd is a waste of time.

Very good introduction to machining. I wasn't sure how much I would get from such a "beginning" video. Turns out I got a lot!

No "secrets" but being an accomplished woodworker I can say that it covers all the basics and fundamentals to build your skills on. I feel like I have a great foundation now.
