Sharpening Woodworking Tools

...with Leonard Lee

Furniture Making how-to video: Sharpening Woodworking Tools by Leonard Lee 4_bulb Review this video!

In this video, with two new chapters on carving and turning tools, Leonard Lee demonstrates the principles he developed in his book The Complete Guide to Sharpening.

He focuses on basic sharpening principles, the proper edge shape for the tool's purpose, and the range of abrasives used to reach the necessary keenness. His examples include knives, chisels, plane blades, cabinet scrapers, turning tools and carving tools, including the dreaded "V" tool.

The DVD version can be viewed on television or computer (with DVD-ROM drive). While there is benefit to watching the instruction in sequence, the DVD has the advantage of a menu, allowing you to go directly to a particular topic. The appendix includes photos and descriptions of all the sharpening tools used in the different sections.

With this instruction, you should be able to achieve the perfect edge with minimal time and cost, from a razor edge on a chisel to a bit of "tooth" on a tomato-slicing knife.

This is a very informative video which covers sharpening of many commonly used woodworking tools and even kitchen knives. It is well presented and the video is good enough to see the little micro edges he's talking about. Better still, Leonard is not trying to sell any of the products from Lee Valley Tools. This is worth seeing and maybe even worth owning.

This video is good. Not 5 star good (I never give 5 stars), but good. The lighting, camera angles, etc are excellent. The only technical issue is with the voice, going hard/loud the soft/quiet. Not a big deal, but noticeable for me. As far as content, I guess this DVD is intended for woodworkers, but I appreciate the kitchen knife segment. This guy knows how to make stuff sharp, and shows how to do it along with tips on equipment, technique, etc. If you could combine the information and videography from this DVD with the techniques and enthusiasm in Ellingwood's Shapening Simplified, you would have the definitive work on this subject. Matter of fact, between the two of them, these two cover it all.
