Jewelry Making how-to video: Keum-Boo with Christine Dhein by Christine Dhein 5_bulb Review this video!

Keum-Boo Basics - Bonding Gold to a Silver

Keum-boo is an ancient Korean technique where 24-karat gold foil is bonded to silver or other metals. This produces a rich gold color, while using very little foil. The simplicity of this technique makes it a fun, inexpensive way to add gold to your work. This easy to follow DVD is perfect for beginners or anyone who wants a solid understanding of the keum-boo process. You will find step-by-step instructions for creating a pair of keum-boo earrings and adding a patina. Chapters: • Introduction • Depletion Silvering • Diffusion Bonding • Cutting Gold Foil • Factors for Success • Burnishing • Work Space Setup • Making Earrings • Torch Safety • Applying Patina

(about 60 minutes)

Keum-Boo Beyond the Basics - Bonding Gold to a Soldered Form

This second volume provides step-by-step instructions for more advanced jewelry making techniques including roller printing and hollow form construction. Learn complex keum-boo procedures including bonding gold to a three-dimensional, textured surface, making repairs and much more. Running time: 90 min.

Chapters: • Diffusion Bonding • Annealing • Roller Printing • Sawing & Filing • Dapping • Soldering • Depleting a Hollow Form • Applying Gold • Burnishing • Checking Your Work • Repairing a Tear • Variations & Patina

I rented both of these and they were excellent! Ms. Dhein is very clear and thorough with her explanations. In the first video she walks you through ALL five times of depletion silvering so that you get a really good feel for the process and how your silver should look. I almost only rented the second video but it was well worth it to rent both. I watched both several times and took copious notes. These videos cover much more than just the diffusion bonding part of gold to silver.

For reference, I am an advanced beginner to intermediate level, mostly self-taught jewelry artist. I recommend these videos for beginners and intermediate level jewelry makers, especially those that are self-taught. If you are comfortable with depletion silvering you could probably skip the first video but with the rental price being such a bargain I recommend renting the two at the same time.

Even though Keum Boo looks intimidating, Christine Dhein was so professional, so neat! Yay Christine! Excellent Teacher!

I found the video excellent and the instructions very clear. I have been trying to raise fine silver to the surface for awhile. I have burnt the metal and then said 'Oh well' now it is reticulated. My previous instructions have been to anneal the metal 5 times or 7 times but I didn't know that I shouldn't bring the metal to bright red each time. I am grateful just to clear that up. If Christine Dhein hadn't gone though the process 5 times I'd still be messing up.

The process of Keum-Boo seems to click with me now. Nothing left to do except buy the gold and a stove thermometer and get to work. We have wood stoves here so they are available. Ms. Dhein suggests that 14 gauge brass, steel or nickel be used on top of the hotplate. Celie Fago suggests copper. I wonder why the difference. It's as if Ms. Dhein purposely left out copper.

Christine comes across in the video as a lovely, charming woman and a born teacher. I learned a lot and thoroughly enjoyed it.

I loved the video. Christine Dhein is so clear in her presentations. I learned a lot from both her videos. I have the tools and materials on order and will start as soon as I get them. These are wonderful videos and full of information.

Thanks.

This DVD is excellent. It doesn't assume that you know much and the descriptions of the processes were excellent. I highly recommend this DVD.
