The basics.
Grab your five-string banjo and get ready to frail! Bob Carlin covers all the basics of the traditional clawhammer styles, teaching the chords, scales, tunings and right-hand essentials you'll need to figure out almost any tune.
The core of this style is the right hand, and Bob demonstrates, in detail, how to get the real old-time clawhammer sound. He shows you easy renditions of four traditional banjo pieces, then adds hammer-ons, pull-offs, and other embellishments that create style and complexity. Within minutes you'll be playing Shortenin' Bread and Cripple Creek in G tuning. Bob introduces Liberty in double-C tuning, which features double thumbing the fifth string, a slightly more advanced right-hand approach. The well-known fiddle tune Soldiers Joy rounds out the lesson, with Bob adding a variety of slides to the other skills you've learned.
Each song is played at a moderate tempo, then broken down, section-by-section, to highlight crucial left- and right-hand techniques. This DVD offers all the skills you need to get started in this exciting style.

I have been through the first of the two (set) of Bob Calrtin's DVD on clawhammer banjo. I thought the lessons were very well thought out and very well taught. Mr Carltin does a very fine job of explaining, playing at a medium speed to follow, and makes it easy to learn the songs. You do not need TAB, but TAB is included for the lesson songs. Great stuff. Sincerely, Dennis.
