Burton Silverman's work has appeared in New Yorker Magazine "Profiles," on the covers of Time Magazine, Newsweek and New York magazine. He has designed dozens of postage stamps and is in the Society of Illustrators Hall of Fame. He was awarded the Geismann Memorial Invitation Retrospective Exhibition. His work has been exhibited in numerous shows and exhibitions throughout the country. Burton Silverman is a prolific painter and one who is regarded as one of America's most important realist artists.
In this, the first drawing tape from Burton Silverman, the viewer is taken on an extensive journey into the realm of figurative drawing. No matter what the medium, drawing, is the basis for all good painting, and Burton Silverman is the perfect artist to guide us through. Because of both his extensive knowledge of drawing and from having taught drawing for more than 45 years as part of his painting classes. Silverman starts the viewer out by explaining the importance of drawing, and to see in graphic terms the shapes and values that are used to compose a picture. He says he works from the outside in, doing a gesture outline from which he then finds the subtleties of shading and high lights. He calls drawing a kind of sculpting, cutting out the shapes and then detailing them. Silverman does two complete drawing on this DVD, one on toned paper with charcoal and one on white paper with pencil. Both are completed Silverman masterpieces. And with the running commentary he gives, this DVD is an extraordinary lesson in Drawing as the language of vision. We hope you enjoy watching it as much as Burton enjoyed making it. There's nothing bettter than seeing Silverman draw. There's no one who draws better. Would be smart of the company that made the CD to allow one to skip ahead or at least to skip to the second drawing. Also would be good to have a split screen so you could see the model and the drawing at the same time.
Fabulous dvd!!! I might even rent it again. I would recommend it to anyone who is serious about drawing or painting.

Excellent! Burton is an excellent artist as well as educator.
I think Mr. Silverman is a national treasure. He shows his methods and thinking behind his art with wit and humor. To watch this DVD is to see a master at work. His other DVDs on watercolor and oil are just as rewarding. Here's hoping he'll do one on pastels.
I enjoyed this DVD so much! To be able to watch Burt Silverman work and draw along with him was invaluable. I love his laid-back conversational style and the way he explains his thought process in such a humble way. I learned volumes from this DVD. Thanks for making it available.
With Burton's outside in approach as in sculpting and his top down approach, I was able to use that left side of my brain and loved it. It was very satisfying getting the values to appear so fast and to be able to place my subject where I wanted it from the beginning rather than starting with a head or torso and ending up with the entire drawing in one corner of the paper. I very much appreciate the solution to a problem that has been bugging me for several weeks.
Excellent DVD. Highly recommend for artists.
Mr Silverman is a real master. Good teaching and simple steps. I enjoyed this DVD. I recommend it highly.
I was disappointed. I have his video of years ago when he painted using the method in his book "Breaking the Rules of Watercolor" and this DVD compares poorly to that venture.
Enjoyed it, good demo as always by Silverman.
Experiencing this video is better than a trip to the spa. The pace and setting were relaxing, yet...invigorating. I would encourage artists of all levels to watch this video. I work as a professional artist and found the information on observing the model, making decisions during the drawing, and delightful personal insight very...very...helpful.
This one was very disappointing. I wouldn't have thought it possible to give a drawing lesson without once mentioning planes, form, direction and a dozen other basic considerations, but he did it!
Simply amazing. I'm a long time Burton Silverman fan. Gorgeous drawing demos and I enjoyed hearing Mr. Silverman's thoughts. His drawings are works of art ...not studies. Also recommend picking up his book The Intimate Eye.
Pros: Two beautiful drawings were presented from start to finish. Several helpful ideas and suggestions were explained along the way. Video quality was good with clear audio.
Cons: The number of ideas presented seemed more suitable for a live demonstration. That is to say, much more could have been added in the form of tips and techniques, given the relatively long running time of the video. DVDs/videos can always be paused, rewound or re-watched if anything is missed. That's one of their key benefits. No DVD menu or scene selection option.
Summary: I'm glad I watched it and would recommend it to others. However, the $15 rental fee is a bit steep. The standard $10 seems more appropriate.
I loved this video, Burt Silverman is a master and this video is a fabulous demonstration. I highly recommend it. joyce c
i search for video that help me in my drawing and painting learning i hope this video be useful
The Smartflix concept is great! It's a needed service for those of us self-disciplined enough to learn on our own with video support. I am disappointed though that the second video I ordered is still outstanding after more than 3 weeks. Hopefully, the savings over buying the videos will justify the delay.
In regards to this video, "The Language of Drawing", I was grossly disappointed, especially since its rental fee was more than the others I qued. Mr. Silverman's drawings were good, but to use a title like "The Language of Drawing" I would expect a real teaching experience. He talked ABOUT his drawings but he did not teach his process. There was nothing about "the language of drawing" explained. We get to see him draw, but we students do not learn why he made drawing choices he made. Worse, the first 1/3 of the video was him talking about his art and not about how we can become competent draftsmen/women.
As an educator and student expecting you, the viewer, to want information that would help your drawing I would urge you to save your money. I think there are other artists who can and do teach the process of drawing and, in so doing, teach "the language of drawing". With a Ph.D. in Applied Linguistics, I am insulted by the use of those words as the title for this video. It is anything but about "the language of drawing". Sadly, you will NOT learn anything about drawing from this video.
Great DVD for the advanced artist or beginner . The basics and finer points of drawing are discussed.
Delightful video. It was a treat to watch Mr. Silverman work. This video shows you two different approaches to rendering the figure that I found very useful. It was very inspiring and I was trying out what I learned the next day. I read some of the other reviews and noted that someone felt the video didn't give them enough of the nuts and bolts of drawing and seeing. This is true. It is not really a video for beginners, it is more about Mr. Silverman's own approach to rendering and does not discuss topics such as anatomy, values,or proportion in any depth. This is a video for more experienced drafts-persons with solid drawing foundation skills or a person who just takes delight in watching a thing beautifully done.
Interesting techniques. Builds values blending with brushes rather than hatching.
