Great instructional value. Just like having your own personal art instructor. Great detail and explanation of steps to do the painting.

Very good indeed.

All I can say is "awesome"!

I don't understand some of the negative comments. The pre-colored mixes are fine but he is certainly not limited and he goes way beyond that concept and tells you how he is mixing colors. I loved his disciplined method of the steps of painting a portrait.I felt like I was in Sargent's studio!

Having attended one of his lectures on portraiture years ago I found this DVD as informative. I highly recommend it.

Sanden is a confident painter, and I found him very worthy of demonstrating Sargent's approach to oil painting. Do not expect any formal instruction on painting here, however. This video commands at least an intermediate level of painting to be of any use. Sanden does not make an attempt to explain things like drawing, planes, edges, values, etc. Of course, you see him execute all of those things, but he does not try to explain himself in an academic way. He paints, and you're along for the ride. If you want actual painting instruction, rent Morgan Weistling's set. But if your painting/drawing skills are up, and you'd simply like insight into the mind of Sargent, I'd recommend this video in a second.

I thought it was pretty good. Of course Mr. Sargent isn't really giving the instruction. I'm not sure that Mr. Sanden is as close to Sargent as perhaps Mr. Gerhartz might be but the video is certainly worth a look.

The Lady Agnew videos are almost as good as watching Mr. Sanden demonstrate in person. He is a great teacher and personality. I would recommend the Agnew videos to all aspiring portrait painters.

As far as I can tell, Sanden has nailed Sargent's method for painting fabric. I loved this DVD and learned a lot from it.

At the beginning of the DVD, John Howard Sanden held up a red, hardbound book about John Singer Sargent written by Evan Charteris. Sanden said he found out about the paints and technique Sargent used from this book. I found this book in a library and would suggest reading it rather than renting this DVD set if you really want to know how Sargent painted. This DVD shows how John Howard Sanden copies a painting. Sargent started with the half-tones in the face. Sand starts with the darks. Sargent painted swiftly and with great energy, using large brushes. Sanden paints slowly and uses smaller brushes. Sargent moved back quickly from a vantage point to canvas and back when painting. Sanden hardly moves at all. Sanden doesn't explain very much about color mixing or what painting medium Sargent used. It was obvious that Sanden had projected the image of Lady Agnew on the canvas and traced it -something Sargent would not have done even though the technology existed in his time. If you want to watch this DVD because you think painting demos are entertaining, then I can recommend it.
