In this new production, Johnnie Liliedahl uses Old Master techniques to paint a modern portrait of one of her favorite models. Intended as an instructional program, she invites you to paint along with her as she develops this painting using methods practiced by artists Leonardo da Vinci, Rembrandt, Ingres and others. Working with photographs of her model, she shows how to use these easy-to-understand techniques to build a solid value structure of the painting before applying color in thin layers of glazes, scumbles and impasto.
Printed reference photographs and helpful notes are included with this DVD program. Use this video to practice new techniques and skills by painting along, or apply the concepts to your own portrait references, and see the difference it will make in your understanding of the processes used by the Old Masters.

great video!!! Johnnie Lilidahl is everything everyone ranted about as a teacher.
I really enjoyed this video by Johnnie Lilledahl! She is such a relaxed teacher and communicates wonderfully her methods to the viewer. I have rented or purchased many of her DVDs and would recommend this DVD to any artist who wants to learn to paint portraits. A+++

This was an excellent video set. It must be very popular because I had to wait for it. It was well worth it and I will rent it again very soon. Johnnie is an excellent teacher and does not make me sleepy.

If you are interested in the Grisaille technique (a dry grayscale underpainting with glazed color onto it) then this DVD is pretty good at showing you what it is and how to do it. I've got to be honest that I didn't take away a lot else from this video. I have rented several others from her and those were great. The other thing that bothers me is that she uses the grid method to draw it, which to me is one notch better than using a projector. She is usually a great instructor and a decent painter, but I was hoping for a little more substance beyond just how to paint Grisaille.
I love it. She is a real good as an artist and teacher. Informative and easy to follow steps.
