Victoria: Painting Portraits in Oils from Photographs

...with Johnnie Liliedahl

Painting: Oil how-to video: Victoria: Painting Portraits in Oils from Photographs by Johnnie Liliedahl 5_bulb Review this video!

Learn fine art techniques including the direct alla-prima painting method to produce a work of art in a loose, impressionistic style. Project materials include computer-prepared guides and maps that will make it easy to see the shape, planes and values on the human head.

This program is designed for beginning portrait painters, and is useful in understanding basic portrait painting concepts, whether the painter uses photographic references or works from the live model, as both scenarios are compared and contrasted.

"Victoria" is painted with a limited palette of colors and shows how you can create realistic fleshtones from just a few basic colors. Recipes for generic flesh colors and values are given, which can be adjusted subtly to match the flesh color of your model, whether it is painted from life or from photographs.

The simplicity of this head and the composition make it the ideal program for a first attempt at portrait painting, as all the photographic references used in the program are included in the printed materials that accompany the video.

Basically, if see that Johnnie Liliedahl has done the video, it is going to be one of the very best available. This is also true of this one. It is full of good tips for all types of oil painting and some special ones for portraits from the 3/4 view.

This video is great! My husband doesn't even paint and he was fascinated by it. We watched it twice. She explains every step in great detail. It was so inspiring that I wanted to run out and buy tons of canvas. I'm a beginner and she made it look achievable.

This was an excellent movie that I would highly recommend. The instruction was very thorough and easy to follow. The instructor was interesting and described basic steps in such a way that you were anxious to see the next step. I would recommend it for anyone who wants to learn how to do portraits and wants to improve flesh tones and composition.

I have rented videos from Johnnnie before. With every video, she approaches it like a teacher, and not like watching an artist who can’t teach. I know I will not be disappointed when I rent her videos.

The video comes with a flyer that has the photo she is copying, and an overview of the steps and paints. She also explains how to alter your reference photo to help you find the values.

Johnnie uses a few common colors, plus black and white. She mixes and explains four flesh tones. Every time her brush is on her palette, or canvas, the camera is watching. You don’t miss anything.

Johnnie explains every stroke, and you can see what she is doing. I watched it twice and took notes, though she says, “if you are painting along with me”.

Once I master what this video covers, I am going to get another portrait video by her.

Great tutorial! I watched it many times. I also painted along with Johnnie some parts of the face. Even if you are a beginner, you can understand what she is talking about. Johnnie gives the viewer important tips, like: the cast shadow darks are darker than the dark side of the face. Or, how to paint believable hair. She uses the same method as David Leffel and Greg Kreutz. Chiaroescuro. It is the lights and the shadows that really mold the face. Enjoy!

Everything Johnnie does is solid, clear, helpful instruction. I'd say this would be a great DVD for someone just starting out to learn portraiture. There are basic principles and some helpful hints to more practiced painters as well. The video itself is excellent - clear shots of the palette, as well as the painting in progress.
