Although, I could tell this was an older video the techniques learned are still in use today. I felt I learned new techniques I had not tried, and these were areas I was still having problems in when sewing at times. In this video Margaret Islander showed you why you have problems with gaping necklines and how to resolve this problem.

Another area was inserting sleeves and she showed me how to resolve this problem. Also I was shown how to make a sleeve header to fill out the sleeve cap, so the sleeve does not collapse. I had never heard of a sleeve header, but it is very easy and inexpensive to make. She also showed you how to make your own shoulder pads, which would save you a lot of money. I bought some fleece and I am going to try this for a coat I am making for this winter 2008.

Also, she showed how to make a floating hem for a heavy item such as coat, which is what I will be making later this summer. I had never heard of one and it will be great to know how to do this for my Melton wool coat I will be making.

There were several other techniques such as underlining pants a great technique I had not seen and more. It was all around one of the best videos I have seen, but I am more into intermediate sewing to advanced. I higly recommend this video if you would like to take your sewing to the next level. I can't wait to rent the rest of the series.

I would not suggest it for a beginner. I think you have other videos much more suitable for beginners such as the series You Can Make It videos, How to Sew A Shirt or Pants by Patti Palmer, Inserting Zippers by Rosebud would be more suitable starting out.

This is a fabulous video -- worth the price of admission to the Sewing University. I learned at least three tips that have made my sewing so much easier. I figured out why the shoulder seams always end up uneven and how to fix that! I've already used several of the techniques and I can see improved results in my garments.

I thought this video had good tips. But just that, tips. Depending upon the type of sewing you do, they may be useful to you or not. I found the video also very dated.
