Creating a Faery Figure

...with Wendy Froud

How-To Video: Creating a Faery Figure by Wendy Froud 5_bulb Review this video!

In this two-disc DVD workshop, renowned artist Wendy Froud explains and demonstrates how to create a faery figure. She begins with a guided visualization to help you access your imagination for unique designs. Wendy then shows how to properly build the armature and prepare the polymer clay, anticipating the various problems that may occur further into the process. From there, she sculpts the head, upper torso, hands and feet, determining the figure's proportions and gesture and explaining how to quickly add facial details with an array of tools. Next, Wendy shows how to fabricate the body and she shares her process for choosing materials for the costume and hair. Finally, she demonstrates painting, assembling the costume, creating the wings and adding hair, all while considering how to give the faery a personality of its own.

This DVD by Wendy Froud is very good. It is a two part workshop on two DVDs. After viewing several times, even a beginner can learn that they can try to construct and model a doll fairy all on there own.

This DVD by Wendy Froud is excellent. It is a sculpting workshop on two DVDs. If you view these two SCSs several times from start to finish, you will have learned enough from it that you can create a doll fairy on your own.

This is a great DVD. It is two parts, so you will have to view the two DVDs in order to see the whole complete fairy that Wendy sculpts in this workshop. By the end of the DVDs, you will have learned a lot of information on sculpting and sewing and creating wings for the fairy dolls. After viewing these dvds,I felt I could create a fairy doll on my own.

I felt the information provided is very useful for beginners to intermediate doll artists. The meditation at the beginning was extremely annoying, but it's on dvd and you can skip past it. Other than that, I highly recommend this dvd for anyone wanting to explore a more laid back approach to dollmaking.

I watched these twice. Once to see how she did it, and then with the pause button to work my own piece after hers. She makes it seem effortless. The major thing I learned here was to not oversculpt and work with a more delicate hand.

This was great. I created a beautiful piece. Although I have been making one-of-a-kind art dolls in fabric for many years, this is my first sculpted figure. I belong to a doll club and have told about 30 people about your web site. The service is wonderful. Thank you Barbara Redemer, Sonoma, Ca.

This is just what I needed to jump start me. I've been fooling around with sculpy for 10 years. I've started some sculps and got side tracked because I didn't have all the answers. This is a good sculpt lessons to get you going. My son and I are working on a gnome. We have it half way done. I ordered some more supplies and will have a professional figurine soon.

I rented the set and am extremely pleased with the amount of info and expertise. Wendy makes it look so easy: she's fantastic! She does not rush through the project and offers hints that are invaluable. I would suggest renting both DVDs: you will want more after the first one is over.

This is a two disc DVD in which Mrs. Froud teaches her methods for creating an art doll, specifically a winged fairy doll. The video starts out with a guided visualization that I didn't care for, but the viewer has the option to skip over that segment if they wish. Others might enjoy it though! Mrs. Froud demonstrates the entire process from creating an armature, preparing the polymer clay, sculpting the head, upper torso, hands and feet. Mrs. Froud teaches how to create the body and how she creates clothing for her dolls. She also goes into wigging techniques and painting the figure's skin and details.

She is a little vague in many area where she falls back on her automatic, practiced skills and assumes the viewer will just "get it" too. This may make it difficult for some beginners to follow, but in all it is a good video and well worth the money.

Mrs. Froud is a creative master and is was a real treat to see the artist who created Yoda and many of the characters from Labyrinth and The Dark Crystal generate a character in her unfettered and gentle style!
