The precise judging of tonal values provides the underlying structure of a portrait. No other factor is more important to the portrait's success. This video explains the bases on which these critical judgments are made... the six kinds of tone... the nine-tone value scale... This is a very good video on the use of value in modelling form. Using a series of mixed grays Sanden paints three studies while discussing light, shadow, half-tone, reflected lights, and so on. The studies are 1) a cube and sphere, 2) a planes of the head model, and 3) a bust of Abraham Lincoln. That gives you a progression from simple shapes to more complex forms.
There's no need for Sanden's pro-mix colors - just black (or any dark color) and white.
Note that this video does not use or discuss color or color mixing.
This is a good video for both beginners and intermediate painters as it teaches you the fundamentals of light, value and planes. I have done the mannequin long time ago when I studied portraiture with an artist. It is a good review for me. I recommend it if you want to solidly build your fundamental skills in drawing and painting.
This is a must for all artists as this master artist and teacher goes into detail on how to make a value scale and how to do a cast painting which is even for an advanced artist so important. I highly recommend this video. Howard Sanden is an excellent speaker and teacher.
The two DVDs I have looked at about Value in Portraiture are GREAT resources. I highly recommend them to anyone looking to learn about the importance of value, or just wants to re-educate themselves on key value points.
