Tune up the fiddle and rosin up the bow! Kenny Kosek will have you playing your favorite tunes and jamming with friends in no time-even if youŽve never played a lick before. Within minutes youŽll be into your first tune, "Jack Of Diamonds," learning to play the melody and then adding slides, open-string drones and bowing patterns to give it an unmistakable bluegrass flavor.
Then itŽs on to classic country hoedowns: "BŽile Them Cabbage Down," "Waterbound" and "Liberty" will introduce you to rhythm playing, melodic variations, double-stop harmonies and country-style bowing. YouŽll learn tricks of the trade such as fills, intros and endings that help you get the true bluegrass fiddle sound. Kenny completes this lesson with an exploration of "Bury Me Beneath The Willow," for which youŽll learn vibrato, slides, hammer-ons and legato bowing.
KennyŽs careful note-for-note breakdowns of each tune make learning easy. This DVD or video is the clearest and most effective way to learn the fiddle youŽll find anywhere.

Good introduction to Bluegrass fiddling. Well-illustrated with detailed views of finger positions. Includes a few pages of sheet music. Fun pieces to play.
Negatives: He moves along VERY quickly, devoting surprisingly little time to correct hand positions. Few people will be able to master intonation and bowing techniques on the fiddle as quickly and easily as he suggests. Vibrato, introduced very early on, will be beyond most beginners' abilities for a while.
Although many fiddlers never learn good basic technique (essential to classical violin playing), they can still have fun; but beware that a poor foundation can limit progression to more advanced playing.
Bottom line: This DVD is fun if you don't get frustrated -- it taked time to learn to play this material well. While beginners should still enjoy this instructional video, it may be appreciated even more by those who hsve already learned basic violin technique from a teacher, and want to explore fiddling.
