TIG Welding Basics

...with Ron Covell

Maintenance how-to video: TIG Welding Basics by Ron Covell 5_bulb Review this video!

TIG welding has been long recognized as the premiere welding process, which can make beautiful, strong welds on nearly any metal. In this easy-to-follow program, Ron Covell covers the basic processes used for TIG welding, covering proper machine setup, joint preparation, electrode selection and preparation, torch technique, and perhaps most importantly, what to check for when things go wrong! Ron’s thoughtful description of the welding process, coupled with the close-up photography that brings the action into clear view makes the seemingly difficult process of TIG welding easy to understand.

Very Basic. I was looking for a little more information. I am good with stick and MIG but never tried TIG - this guy makes it look easy. I have never see TIG in action, so this was worth renting.

If you are already good at TIG welding, this might not teach you much, but after all it is titled "Basics", and I thought it was a great video for discussing the basics of TIG welding. They showed him run several beads, and he does a good job explaining what he is doing.

I also watched the Weldpro video, and this one was much better.

DVD was pretty good. If you have no knowledge of GTAW process, then this is even a better vid for you. If not, some of the stuff might be boring and repetitive.

Also, one problem i did note is that they didnt use a dark enough lens for the camera. You can see the bright light from the arc, but cant see the actual weld puddle.

I wish he had shown more welding on more difficult stuff like tubing and out of position welding, but i guess thats why the title says "TIG Welding Basics"

Well presented and organized. Easy to follow. Informative.

I thought this was well done. Ron Covell presents basic tig welding in a pleasant manner. I found it easy to watch several times. The filming was done with good lighting and focus.

This is MUCH better than the other TIG dvd available here by Donovan.

Ron presents the info in a very organized and concise manner.

If you're looking for a very basic intro to TIG this is pretty good, although I found it maybe TOO basic, and I've only been playing with TIG for less than a month. I'd have liked to see more actual welding footage.

A little bit darker filter on the camera lens would have helped.

Very informative program. Anyone who is contemplating taking up Tig or has recently started will benefit from watching this program.

Great video! I have some limited TIG experience, but this video is great for anyone not advanced and maybe some advanced weldors as well. I learned a lot. Well worth it!

The most serious drawback of this video was the quality of the playback; many audio skips curtailed of the information received.

As the viewer gets further into the video some information is glossed over or superficial and the more obvious steps in the process over-emphasized.

All of this said, it is still a worthwhile video for the beginning TIG welder or even one who some experience but lacks some technical information.

This is one of the best and most explained material that I have seen in reference to welding. Mr. Covell took the time to make a very well and informative material.

Lots of good info but delivery is WAY too slow. He makes sure to get every little detail, which is excellent, but he takes FOREVER to get around to demonstrating the actual welding. I watched the whole thing at 2x speed and didn't miss a single detail.

I was impressed as hell when he welded two pieces of aluminum foil together.

Very well done video. Slow enough to explain the processes, but still feels like the video moves along enough not to be boring. I have very little MIG experience and knew almost nothing about TIG. It is a great intro video to TIG. I like that he shows how it should work, but also gives examples of mistakes and what they look like.

This disk was great and I was able to view the intire disk. A well done demonstration of TIG welding with a lot of good info.

Can't believe this DVD is sold for $60! I think you can learn more online.

This DVD is a waste of time.

He's got a good rapport with the viewer which makes for better learning.

It's frustrating that the filter used on the camera wasn't dark enough. I wasn't able to see any of the puddles Mr. Covell made.

He does a good job of demonstrating what can go wrong in a TIG weld which is seful for diagnosing my own welding problems.

Great introduction to TIG Welding, in spite of having done other welding I was new to TIG! Now I feel better able to try the TIG welder I've owned for years.

I enjoyed the DVD and fortunately was familiar with most of the techniques. Ron does a great job explaining the concepts but TIG welding requires alot of hands-on time. Anyone interested in TIG welding would benefit from this DVD. The razor blade and foil tricks were impressive.

Good intro to TIG welding.

I like the service and business model. Most of these videos are MUCH more expensive to buy than the typical movie. So much so that I would probably never buy one. Anything over $20 is just too much money for something I'll only watch once and never watch again. But if I can rent it for under $10 including shipping, etc....... I'll probably be doing this again as time and projects allow.

As a complete novice the information was good. Ron was a bit dry and slow of word but bearable. My only complaint was the "Fun Projects" section which consisted of two useless tricks and aren't even all that incredible. But all in all worth the rent.

This is a good overview for someone who knows nothing about tig welding, (like me). After going through an introduction of settings for the welder, he commences to demonstrate proper technique. Careful viewing of the demonstrations give a good idea of speed, pacing, etc. He has some good advice about starting out. He works in a safe controlled style that it would be good for the beginner, (me), to adopt. His generally positive delivery is encouraging.

It was a great introduction to TIG. The only drawback is nothing was done with the camera to capture the welding pool very well. You kind-of have to guess what is happening when filler is added. I'd love an "Advanced TIG Welding" DVD that continues where this one leaves off.

Excellent tutorial for the beginner TIG welder. The quality of the audio, video, and lighting is very professional. I've viewed other Welding and metalworking DVD's that were poorly done, but this one is way above them! The only negative remark that I have is the speaker repeats himself too many times concerning the post gas flow and how important it is. Once or twice would have been sufficient. Otherwise, the material is excellent. The speaker comes across as being friendly, he speaks clearly, and he obviously knows what he's talking about.

Also, as other reviewers have mentioned, I would like to see an advanced TIG welding DVD from this same person.

Great video for learning about TIG welding!! I particularly liked the section on how to diagnose TIG welding problems. How things like oil, improper electrode adjustment, and improper amperage could affect the quality of the weld. This is filled with very useful basic instruction for the beginner, and I would recommend it highly to anyone that is just starting out!!

Hello Smartflix,

The TIG welding DVD I rented from you was excellent and I in fact purchased one from Ron Corvel's website. Thanks again for a quality product. Dave Maltais

I knew nothing about the Tig welding process and the video explained a bunch, in fact maybe a little bit of overload on me. I need a tig welder for gunsmith work for welding bolt handles on the bolt of a rifle. I can see where it would be useful for building up metal and then reshaping a worn part. Overall, It helped me a bunch. Thanks, Smartflix

Excellent DVD! Well worth it. I learned a lot as a beginner, I just wish I could have the equipment that was used but i am going to practice and more practice I recommended to my friends.

This is a great DVD. The instructor is low key but boy does he know what he is talking about and he has an engaging presentation. I am just getting back into TIG welding after a 30 year hiatus and I just wish I had had this info when I first started. Seemingly simple stuff that is so important to the process that I never knew when I started. If you are new or having problems with your TIG welding you will be glad you rented this video. Two Thumbs Up!

This is a pretty good intro to TIG. I've attended a number of little one hour "here's how to TIG" seminars, but it's never left me with enough info to actually TIG weld. After watching this video, though, I was able to lay down some nice beads on steel, add filler rod and weld a few passable joints. Definitely worth the watch for the beginner TIGger.

I've TIG welded for a few months, but I'm mostly self-taught so I keep my eye out for helpful information. I thought the video 'TIG Welding Basics' was very good. There were quite a few things in the video I didn't know or hadn't thought of.

I recommend it.

I found the TIG Welding Basics very informational and allowed me to comprehend how easy, with practice, TIG welding might be. I needed someone to take the mystery out of TIG Welding and Ron Covel did just that. Clearly a product to keep in one's library to review on occasion when having a bad day welding. Just an outstanding video.......

Very good instructional DVD, especially if you are considering what kind of welder to get. Very clear & informative, not a 'garage DVD'. Could have used a bit better closeup photography on the 'puddle', but I don't know if thats possible given the temp & shield etc.

The quality of the welding portion of the video was poor. Use of better filters so you can see the melt pool would help visualize the welds. Its a good place to start and I would recommend it to others.

Excellent introductory video. Mr. Covell, who has written many books on the subject, does an excellent job of presenting basic TIG welding methods and techniques. Everyone including those who’ve previously TIG welded will learn from watching. The extended delivery for the DVD shouldn’t discourage anyone from placing an order for this DVD. It will be time well spent.

The video parts I was able to view were fine, however you sent either a damaged/inoperative disk. I returned it together with a request for a non-defective replacement. I want to review a later section but was unable to, as the disk stopped operating well before I reached the place (TIG-welding copper) for which I'd ordered the disk. I received and viewed this disk last year, and still hope to reach you by some means to repeat again my request for a replacement. William P. Reimann, Cambridge, MA.

This was a good DVD. I took a TIG welding class (hands on) a couple of years ago but didn't feel comfortable firing up the used TIG welder I recently bought. i.e what rod, what amperage, etc, etc. This video provided a great refresher that was invaluable to getting me started again. In addition, there was considerable practical information in the DVD that I didn't pick up during class.

Bottom line, if you have any interest in TIG welding, this would be a great video to watch.
